I am planning a 12 day vacation on the beach in Phuket Thailand ( south west coast) in early September. The US government travel site says to use caution because of some terrorist groups setting off bombs. But most people I spoke to said Thailand is not at all dangerous unless you go looking for trouble. What is your experience?

From what I've heard, the most you have to worry about is some seriously f*cked up bugs...

Any time you leave the US (it seems), you are at risk of a bombing, but I haven't seen or heard anything to mark Thailand as more at-risk than anywhere else.

I hope it is safe! My wandering daughter (4 Contenents, 25 countries at 25) has booked her flight for July. She is meeting her friend there for 11 weeks of backpacking through Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Singapore and Nepal.

I've been to Phuket and it is totally safe except for the occasional hundred year tsunami. The security issues are up north by the boarder with Burma / Myanmar. The opium dens are also in the Golden Triangle area but the explosions generally go unnoticed by den patrons.

I would backpack through 4 out of 5 of those countries if I had a metallic suit and anti-snake boots that came up to my eyes.

George, did you stumble across any opium dens during your journey?

She will probably just go with tennis shoes, shorts and a t-shirt.

...personally, I would be dead-set against this. Human trafficking is a huge danger in some of those areas, and an American girl is a prized target, especially off in the boonies where she is likely to be traveling. Not to scare you to much, but I will pray daily for her safety.

Then again, maybe I watch to many Liam Neeson movies.

She is an adult who makes her own decisions and earns the money to pay for it. She and her friend were in the middle of Egypt, Kenya and Tanzania for 3 months when she was only 23. Backpacked Europe at 22 (at times solo) and Central America at 20 and 21. They know the risks and know how to be very cautious. The will generally stay in the well traveled areas. A couple of kids (boy and girl in their early 20s) they know were abducted, raped, tortured for a day and murdered here in our town. Happens a lot more in the major metro areas of the US. It can happen here...it can happen there.

They hope to trek up to base camp one (17,700 ft) of the southeast ridge route to Mt. Everest out of Nepal and that sort of thing.

I of course will pray daily for their safety and safe return home as well. I do that now.

I spent several weeks in Thailand this past summer. As long as you stay in the city limits and avoid the crazy small-town Muslims you are fine.

Solid is right..if you stay in the right places...you should be OK. It is also good to have a friend along or more. My son just went there...and one of my collegues has been to Thailand several times...no problem (a female).

Wow, your girl is something special! Mine backpacked Europe with a friend a couple of years ago at age 23. She's got her sights on Thailand...we'll see.

But climbing up Mt. Everest!!!....she climbs mountains too? Even getting to base camp is tough and dangerous. I know a guy here that has climbed Mt. Everest twice (the only Quebecer ever to do so), he made a short film and it is very interesting. Btw, that mountain is littered with dead bodies....they don't bring you back down when you die, you stay there forever. One guy in his group died on the last trek.

I wish your daughter a safe journey...trust me, I know how you feel when she's gone. I instruct my daughter to email me everyday if possible....although I don't know about getting an internet connection in the jungle.

My 23 year old daughter went to Thailand a month or so ago for a week with some fellow students. She said basically the same thing- if you're not looking for trouble, you'll be fine.
She's schooling in Singapore, and has gone to Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines as well. My wife stresses out over it, and she goes anyway and has a blast every time.
She did a few weeks in Nepal several summers ago, and loved the people there.
