1812 Overture!!

I just listened to the Cincinatti Symphony Orchestra performance of the 1812 Overture included on the Telarc disk "The Best Of Tchaikovsky" again. A while back I added a second amp into my mix. Now using two Carver TFM 35x. One for each rti150. Vertical bi-amping using one channel for the three 3-6.5", and the other for the mid driver and tweeter. Source is Toshiba dvd9200, analog out through some recently added Kimber Heros to Parasound PLD 1100 pre. Speaker cables are vintage Kimber 4PR runs.
The cannons toward the end of the piece simply blew me away! They were impressive before, but now unreal!! The meters on the amps were peaking at around sixty watts during the "blasts". I tell you what, sixty watts sure does make some sound.
Ultra quick, extremely punchy and clean as a whistle! Not sure if the Heros changed things, but the difference between then and now was enough to inspire this rant. The extra amp definately opens things up. I noticed that right off.
Anyway, for those of you that appreciate classical music, I highly recommend you check ou this disk if you don't already have it. The number on it is Telarc CD-80539. Definately worthy of anyones collection. I know others have mentioned it here before, but it's been awhile and I felt the urge for a reminder.
Enjoy, I think I need some more!

I'll second this. The 1812 is a nice piece of classical work that WILL put your bass sub-system to the test.....FIRE AT WILLDamn....8 lines...I've gotta put my sig on a diet now....

Didn't know this one existed! My day would play the 1812 early in the morning when i was growing-up so I've always had an affinity for it. Heading to tower tonight to pick it up. Thanks

Digitally recorded.
"Digital cannons" was Telarc's way of saying "caution" when they
came out with their digitally recorded "1812" in 1979--before CD's.
I have the record, and you can see where the cannon shots
are on it as the grooves are about 1/8" apart--allowing for
the huge lateral shifts necessary for the sudden "whacks".
That, and the fact that it contains information in the 8-16 Hz range
means turn it down--at least for the first playing.

You haven't heard/felt these cannon blasts unless your sub can play down to at least 15 Hz. Talk about room decay - holy momma! These cannons hit you hard in the chest, and then the subsonic percussion blast just waffles through the room. Amazing stuff.
Great post! What a classic movement.

Hey Pensacola I've got the Telarc vinyl as well...most turntables/cartridges had a hard time tracking that gap.....very cool to watch..album/vinyl looks like a stock market graph. I have never heard more bass on a recording personally.
