Never heard of him...but it's always sad when cancer takes a life.

Mesothelioma is the most common form of cancer, if I remember correctly.

He was a pro football player in the 70's, but really got famous in the 80's for his commercials promoting FTD.

It's rare and almost always the result of exposure to asbestos- which is why you hear about it so much.

Most common is skin (Nonmelanoma, almost no one dies of this) followed by lung, then prostate & breast are about the same.

Olsen was rookie of the year for the Rams in 1962 and is still the Rams' all-time leader in career tackles with 915. He was named to 14 consecutive Pro Bowls, a string that started his rookie year.

Actually it was his fame in football that opened all the other doors...he will always be known as one of the Fearsome Foursome, a football Hall of Famer, and a football great above all else. The younger posters might have never had a chance to have seen him at his real best....tackling, the man was a monster on the line...

I lived down the street from him for many years. When I was 15, he once took hold of the front of my shirt & lifted me over his head - with one arm. I was impressed! He was a very good man. Soft spoken, mannerly and just all around good guy.

Great Post. Deacon Jones, Merlin Olsen, Lamar Lundy, Rosy Grier, made up the "Fearsome Foursome" under George Allen. Great years for the LA Rams, a championship never coming to fruition, sadly. A gentle giant, a Hall of Famer in every sense of the word, and really, not that bad of an actor. R.I.P. Merlin, we need more like you.
