Well a day that I have been putting off for quite a long time. A coupe of weeks ago one of my wisdom teeth broke on me and now I have a bad toohace. I went ot the dentist last week and they told me that I need to have all 4 removed. So tomorrow is the day. They said since none are impacted that they will just numb me up and pop them out.

I have to admit I am very nervous about the whole ordeal. I never liked the dentist to begin with and now going to get four teeth yanked out freaks me out even more. I never even had a cavity and still dont.

So what I need is some good stories of people that have had this done to help put me at ease.

Thanks
Dave

Dave, I had mine out many moons ago, I was put to sleep because they had to be cut out, not a bad ordeal for me anyways. One way to look at it is, once they are gone you won't have to worry about those hurting anymore. David

    I had all 4 removed in one-shot when I was 22.

IV shot - down and out. Woke up with gauze in my mouth, a bit groggy, jaw a bit sore, but it wasn't so bad.

The worse was just keeping the food bits out of the stitches.

    Don't worry man - you'll be fine! :D

I was put out for my wisdom teeth but when I was in the 6th grade I had 4 other permanent teeth pulled out (I had too small of a mouth for the proper fit or something) and was so high on laughing gas it was awesome. It really isn't too bad. just relax after they give you the shots its all good.

I had mine done a few weeks ago, no big deal really. It will only take 15-20 min or so to take them out after the local takes effect, no need for nitrous or general if you don't mind the noise. The vicodin takes care of the pain for the next day or two and the 800mg ibuprofen will take you the rest of the way.

The Novacain takes a few hours to wear off so you have plenty of time for a few errands after the procedure before you have to be home. :)

You might want to skip reading this one.

I had mine out in the USMC at age 20. They did a side at a time.
For the first round, they found a Navy Corpsman who had never done it before.
He left a bruise in my chest(from his knee!) and made a mess of it.
I couldn't open my mouth for days. A real Navy dentist pulled the second two.
No picnic, but nowhere near as bad.

I don't and never did have wisdom teeth. Weird, huh? If you knew me, this fact would tell you a lot about me.

Yes, be very worried about DRY SOCKETS! The older you are (past your 20's), the more likely you will get them. Ask the Dr for advice on how to minimize the possibility and follow their advice strictly!

I had two dry sockets when I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth taken out about 8 years ago now. It was the worst pain I've ever been in. It just overwhelms you and radiates out of your jaw up into your neck and head and basically makes you non-functional. Pain medicine does nothing for them, not even the hydrocodone types. If you get them, it will be about two weeks of non-stop pain. The only thing that works to minimize the pain is clove oil. Yes, clove oil. The Dr has these little cotton cloths soaked in clove oil. They use tweezers and stuff the cloth down into the dry socket. It helps deaden the pain right at the nerve endings. Of course, you can taste nothing but cloves for days, and they start to loose effectiveness after about 36 hours, so you have to make repeated trips to the Dr. office to have them replaced.

Did I convince you its no fun? I hope so. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

If you don't get dry sockets, the pain is minimal. You'll be over it in 2-3 days, but that is when dry sockets can start to rear their ugly head. If you feel like the pain is getting worse after 2 days, just march yourself back and get the clove oil things. Don't waste any time.
For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore...

Do Not use a drinking straw, or do anything to create suction/vacuum in your mouth ! It'll pull out the packing from the sockets, if your dentist does pack them at all.

I had all 4 of mine removed in November. I was nervous about it for sure. I got the gas to calm my nerves. They numbed me up and I did not feel a thing. After the fact i got loritabs 7.5 and I was good. It sucked afterwards but it was not that bad.

Make sure that you rinse as instructed and be mindful of dry sockets. They suck, I had a minor one.

I still have two left and I'm older than most of you....dentists disagree about whether you need to remove 'all' of them at once. It is sometimes 'necessary' but usually it's a preemptive strategy for the future....I have the two bottoms left....one is impacted and has NEVER caused any problem so the advice has been don't mess with what is not a problem. The other is doing fine by its own there in the back!

In most instances the Dentist can pop out one or two in a few minutes or even less than a minute..it's eerie to watch it just come right out.

And most of the time, unless you do all 4, which you are doing, it's no BIG DEAL...minor discomfort and caution for a few days so you don't muck everything up..then you're fine.

    Good Luck.

I had mine cut out via surgery. Hurt like hell. My jaws were so swollen I looked like a chipmunk getting ready for winter for a week and could only eat/drink through a straw. The drugs were nice though.

How's that for a "feel good" story?

I had 4 impacted wisdoms, so the dentist couldn't do it. Went to a maxillofacial surgeon(oral surgeon) to have it done.

Phentanil IV to put me under and then I woke up 30 minutes later, pain free, with a mouth full of gauze.

The pain set in within an hour or two, so get your pain med quickly!!! I'm immune to codeine, so I get opiates(oxycodone, vicodin, etc...).

Eating was real slow for the first week in my case, but I'm a smoker, so a slow healer. My bad!

Also, the stitches took something like 3-4 weeks to dissolved and fall out. It doesn't hurt, but it did seem weird.

edit: note on bruising. Bruising is a pooling of blood under the skin. So in my case, the beard kep the cheek bruises hidden. But within a week, that blood pooled down to my adam's apple, so I had a big old bruise the size of my palm right in the middle of my neck. Looked funny, but nothing to worry about.

Just got back. 3 of the teeth came out within a few minutes. The last one that was giving me a problem took him a long time to get out. My jaw is very sore from all the work he did but otherwise it was not as bad as I thought it would be. We shall see what happens when the novicane wears off.
