OMG! Been waiting for this one to premier on HBO for a year when I first heard about it, and it's finally going to this Sunday. Should be as good as Band OF Brothers.

Who's going to watch it?

I have been waiting for this for a long time as well. Band of Brothers is my alltime favorite...just watched the entire thing again for like the 7th time. It gets better with age (Sort of like me).

I've been chomping at the bit for this one. HBO will exceed "Band of Brothers," which is a hard act to follow, on this one I'm sure.

I wish they didn't discontinue "Rome" as it was an awesome show but I understand it cost way, way to much to produce.

Ditto to everyone else. This is #1 on my buy list when it comes out on blu-ray.

Can't wait until it is released on BR DVD. The only way to watch HBO, and any TV. Let's try not to talk about this until it is out on DVD. Thanks. :D
Or....maybe don't check this thread until you're ready to read about it that way the rest of us can discuss whatever we'd like :D

I'm currenty considering grabbing HBO in order to see this, been looking forward to it for a long time now, not sure if I can wait until it hits Blu Ray.

I would love to watch this but I don't have HBO so I'm probably going to have to hit up an online service or snag it in the torrents...at least until it comes out on DVD.

Then again, Band of Brothers was pretty much a blind buy.

I would think it to be as good if not better then BoB as HBO is using the same people to produce it I believe. Being that there was more hand-to-hand combat in the Pacific arena there will be more grueling scenes that might be more unsettling than guys being blown to pieces by the German 88s.

We shall see. IMO BoB is til this day the very best thing ever put to film, the whole thing was perfect from the combat to the gritty look to the emotion it aroused, it's hard e imagine anything ever being as good as that, much less topping it.

I should probably know better than to mention this on a public forum, but the "Why We Fight" episode in that series is the closest I've ever come to actual tears while watching something on a television screen, wiith a distant second probably being that scene in season 2 of 24 where Jack was going to crash the plane and had to tell his daughter he was going to die...

HBO has made several shows that would bring me to tears.

One that just came to mind was in the Sopranos episode where Jackie junior was hit and at the end of the show, they were playing the song "Return To Me" while showing Roe and a few others. It just grabbed my hearstrings and jerked them.

there are few "television events" anymore like there used to be that would capture a wide audience. I think you can describe this as a television event. At least I think of it that way.

I didn't see BoB when it aired on HBO. But found out about it when it hit DVD.. then I watched the whole series in two or three nights and was totally blown away. I mean.. at the edge of my seat most of the time.

Everyone should watch BoB whether it's your thing or not.. it's that good and that important of a part of history.

I hope it is as good as the Band of Brothers, but I don't have HBO and will have to wait until it comes out on DVD/Blu Ray.

My father was a soldier in the Pacific Theater of WWII. Many years later, he privately got off of his chest his war experiences to me. He never would speak of it much to anyone else within the family.

Dad said he killed 4 Japanese soldiers during his time there. By his recollection to me, it haunted him for doing this. However, if he did not kill them, they would have killed him, so he did what he needed to do to survive. These separate killings were in armed conflict.

I don't have HBO either, but the moment it becomes available, I'm on it. My brother was lucky enough to watch BoB with my father (1st Army under Bradley) before he passed. It was the only time my dad really ever talked much about his experience beyond a couple of funny anecdotes.

I watch a lot of shows on the History International channel. All of the shows that have veterans interviewed (American, British, Japanese, Germans, etc)and sharing their experiences of both the European and Japanese theater, these vets always say how they are haunted and have had or still have nightmares and guilt. Most break out in tears during the interview . . . to think these guys who really saved the world are still suffering from something that occurred 60 years ago is quite unsettling. To say war is hell is an understatement IMHO.

It was pretty good, and the episode for next week looks even better, but IMO it's not on the level with Band of Brothers, not yet anyway, but we still have 9 more episodes!

I wasn't that impressed. I thought the BOB first episode was perfect. Took you into the lives of the company. You knew the people, the struggles, etc. In watching the HBO first look into The Pacific, they said this would do that even more. I felt like it started (Good start), here's a few characters, now we're in battle. We'll see what happens from here...I'm sure the battles will be fantastic.

I'm watching it again now, and thinking that the battle scenes will be as good as Band of Brothers, but it just doesn't have the same 'feel' as Band of Brothers. I realize it's only the first episode, but it simply doesn't compare with the first episode of BoB.

I never saw Band of Brothers, so I can't compare the two.

I watched the first episode last night. I thought it was good. But, I also thought the director tried too hard to have the main characters make an emotional connection with the viewer.

I think for most of us who has watched BoB, there is a missing character build-up in The Pacific that we were sort of expecting, to cling to the BoB's emotional strength. I found myself tried to make those connections and has yet to connect. To be fair, this is only Part One, and I am keeping an open mind and trying hard to disconnect from BoB and treating The Pacific on its own merit. Time will tell, I guess.
