Tweeking/Tuning Question

I am a novice home theater guy and have a question that may seem impossible to answer at the outset. Here goes: i'm running a Yamaha rx v465 with a Rm 75 speaker system (and 12 inch sub). I ran the ypao mic test for the speakers and, although it sounds pretty good, what else can I tweek on my amp to get better sound? What specific manual settings could I play with in the amp's settings that will further enhance the sound? If I adjust the EQ, what are good settings? The crossover is currently set to 120hz.

Also, I have an older blu ray player (Sony Bdp s350) and was sadly disappointed to learn that it does not support mp3 format for music discs. I was really looking forward to being able to listen to mp3 music discs while I had company over or was just cleaning the house and wanted to turn up the music. Any suggestions in that area? Will the s350 play a dvd disc if I burn music to it? Any help is much appreciated.

Hey Brian I am in Conyers also. We need to hookup.
    Ben

Edit: An spl meter is one of the best tools for setting up a system. RadioShack has them for $50.
Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
    Thanks

Ben is the man, set up a time and date to get him over your house, and he will have you up and running in no time. The recommended crossover setting from THX is 80hz, so give that a shot and see if it makes a diff. for you. What exactly are you feeling that you are missing from your rig? You could try boosting the levels of a few speakers to see if that does anything, or messing around with the crossovers. This is all subjective, and what sounds good to me, may not to you. Welcome to Club Polk, and hope this helps.

Thanks for the responses, guys. Maybe I am expecting too much from the RM75 system, and maybe since I came from a system with tower speakers, maybe i am missing that mid-range punch that is no longer there. Which leads me to another question: can the Yama Rx v465 be configured to be a 7.1? I may just add a pair of tower speakers in the future.

And Ben, it's a small world I guess. We'll have to hook up sometime, although since joining this site, I am wanting to spend lots of money on stuff that I probably do not need. Working night shift does not help with that. Take Care

The RM75 is a pretty decent HTIB, but in no way will compare to a HT with some towers, like you said. The Yammy you speak of is only a 5.1 ch AVR, so no, it can't do 7.1. I know how you feel with the Night Shift, same problem here, lol. You have to understand (and I'm sure you do) the the RM75 is a smaller HTIB and is only capable of doing so much, since after all, it is comprised of satellite speakers, not full range floorstanders. Good luck.

    WELCOME TO CLUB POLK!

You have a HTIB there....so the sub crossover needs to be higher than the standard 80hz because your satellites probably don't reach much below 110 or 120hz! You should consult your Polk manual for the ideal crossover setting!

    My personal ear says:

    L/R - 150Hz (can do 120Hz if RM8)
    Center - 120Hz
    Rears - 150Hz
    LFE - 120Hz

The RM85/RM75 satellites produce little base so you will need to send the entire base range to the sub to compensate.
    Zone 1
    (5.1 Setup)
    -- VM 20 (L/R)
    -- RM 8 Center (center)
    -- VM 10 (S.L/R)
    -- DSW microPRO 1000 (LFE)
    Zone 2
    -- Atrium 45
    Denon AVR-2809
    (7.1 Setup)
    -- RM 6600 (L/R + center + S.L/R)
    -- RM 7 (SB.L/R)
    -- PSW 350 (LFE)
