Let the 3d tv wars begin!

And yes, I can see a big market in the future for "moded" 3D glasses and Internet sites that will offer "how to crack the copyright protection" that will undoubtedly be embeded in the lenses of standard market glasses with subsequent lawsuits and such. Then I'm sure there will be huge and bitter debates over whether expensive specialty frames offer a "deeper, richer, more liquid 3D field" over stock frames. And, most importantly, whether a certain "E" word glasses company who offer cheaper 3D glasses, marketed with the freely used term "reference", have spawned an Internet cult of brain washed trolls.

I have a couple of porno blu ray's and find them to be much more enjoyable than some of the standard def **** I have. I guess I am like most in that I believe it will help the price of top tier 1080P set's drop and give me a chance for a real nice new bedroom TV to watch that **** on.
Still, I believe content will be what is needed to drive this. Directv will soon launch a 3D channel, as will ESPN so if sports catches on and the technology matures it will find a place.

Well, from what I heard, upgrading to a 3D TV is not the only part. One will need to buy a 3D BDP, a 3D HDMI receiver/processor if running stuff via receiver/processor, and, of course, new 3D HDMI cables (1.4?)...
So, it won't be an easy upgrading process. There will be bloodsheds and divorces due to all the sneaking purchases; there will be scams and false promises from manufacturers (this made me almost cry out loud thinking about my first LCD - a $5000 45" Sharp Aquos LC-45GD4U purchased in 2004 which those Sharp f@ckers advertised as a true 1080p set  F@cking scam ).
The only thing good about this 3D thing is we will see a dramatic price reduction of the current AV models.Gears shared to both living room & bedroom:

IT was getting me sick.
I think it's still 3 - 4 years away.
This technology makes alot of people sick. For this reason alone, it may never be as successful as HD or 4K.
For me, 4k is where its at....so I'll wait for that."The good thing about science is that it's true whether or not you believe in it." Neil deGrasse Tyson. -
Can anyone confirm whether or not a standard Blu-ray player will play these 3D discs? Or do we now need to all get different Blu-ray players with newer versions of HDMI and new 3D decoding etc?

Not positive Curt, but I think it has to be a 3D specific player. I haven't seen much on this topic other than this thread so I may be wrong. Don't see why they would make it compatiable with current players via firmware update or something to that effect, since most of the money would come from having to buy a new unit. I'm sure somebody has the answer though.

Edit: found a good article on the subject and it looks like I was wrong. Sony says they plan to release a firmware update for the PS3 that would make it capable of doing 3d!! Only thing is that the PS3 is HDMI v1.3a spec. so it looks like 3D will work with the 1.3a? Anywhoot, this article may help, lol.

Is HDMI v1.4 adequate for 3D?
The ps3 (ironically a blu-ray launch player way back in 2006), is the only old player that I've heard that can be upgraded to play 3D. But I've also read that it may not be full 1080p, but that it may split the signal into two 1080i ones or something like that.
I think that besides the obvious pain to wear the glasses, the underlying technology isn't all that new or revolutionary for 3D. That's why the 3D flat panels are coming out at such low prices compared to previous flat panel introductions. You basically just need to produce two versions of the same picture. The problem comes that you've now doubled the amount of information you need to send over all those connections (I think they have to share the same refresh bandwidth as well, so expect all those refresh numbers to go up.) HDMI 1.4 is supposed to handle all the extra bandwidth requirements.
That said, I wouldn't expect other old players to be able to upgrade via firmware upgrades for the same reason the ps3 is the only launch player that continues to be firmware upgradable to new technologies. The ps3, as a game console, is over engineered for a blu-ray player. It has more on board memory, a faster and more versatile core processor, many built-in networking capabilities, and a much more robust operating system. Blu-ray dedicated players, by comparison, probably have the bare minimum hardware and software to meet the needs of their current feature set. So pushing any type of upgrade to dedicated players is usually beyond what they can do. -
I'm heading up to the Panasonic show in D.C. in a few weeks to check out the new technology. Is anyone else going to this? It's all in the detail.

Even more reasons why I love my PS3!!!! LOL. I probably won't bother with this technology, unless I have to, but it's nice to know I can without having to drop any more diugh.

Interesting point the Op makes on the glasses. What I gather as of now, they range in price from 100-150 bucks each. I can only assume that all 3-d glasses won't be created equal as not all sunglasses are either. Instant market for higher end glasses. Of coarse, assuming people go gaga over this new technology but personally, I think the way the economy is, I wouldn't bet on seeing numbers like HD did.HT SYSTEM-
