The best improvement yet less than $100

Well less than $100 and 2 hours later I installed a 50amp sub panel and 2 duplex outlets for my system. The run from the sub panel is only 6 feet from the sub panel of 12/3. The old wiring ran the kitchen, dining room, living room, and air handler. Everything is so much better. Smoother, better dynamics, sharp(clean) symbol hits, and sweet mids. I can't stress enough what a clean source of power can do for you. With electricity it isn't so much about the available power. I never tripped a breaker. It is about cutting out all the noise. With standard wiring you have a junction from light switch to outlet to outlet to switch box and so on. I have been putting this off for a long time and it really needed to be done. Before the mids and highs were grainy, but I blamed it on the Adcom's and my tubes. The tubes really appreciate the clean power the most, and drove me to do the sub pannel install. BTW I stole the range wire for the sub panel. The house was setup for gas or electric stove. I like to cook on gas anyway.

I've been reading about cutting stuff out of the circuit. Not too easy for most but sure is nice to do it if you can, and when a lightning storm comes around ,it would be easy to cut just the power to the system at a breaker.
Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.

I agree with Sal, In a storm the only way to protect your equipment is to completely disconnect it from the house wiring, i.e. pull the plug

Yeah the electricity can travel up the ground even if the breaker is off.

You are absolutely right Ben. I had this done a couple of months ago, and the improvement was huge. You're also spot on about tubes really needing clean, stable power to sound their best. I only gig with tube amps, and I've been lugging around power conditioner/line regulators for years for that very reason. Enjoy the upgrade :)

Some people say that is not enough, that lightning will jump across an open breaker.

What I do is I unplug my system and I move the plug as far as I can from the outlet.

For every 1000 volts of electricity you will get an arc of approximately 5mm. That is why battery backups and surge protection is of little use with a close proximity or direct strike.
