Wonder why I even bother

At times I wonder why I even bother calling people on CL that dont list a make or model number of what they are attempting to sell, I know from past experience that people who do this seem to feel that it is really unimportant.

For example I called a fellow today that had listed a 40" plasma television for sale for $600.00 here is the gist of this conversation. Him. Hello? Me. yes I am calling about the plasma television, Him. Ok well I still have it. Me. good can you give me a little info on that? Him. well it's about 4" thick and everyone says it has a good picture. Me. well great, You wouldnt happen to know the make or model number of this television would you? Him. No sure dont. Me. Now is this a plasma or an LCD? Him. Well. I payed $1500.00 for it. Me. hmmm... thinking to myself you paid way too much, wow is it really that tough to get out of the armchair and go take a look? Me well how long have you owned this tv? Him. About 8 months. Me thinking again.... and after 8 months of staring at this thing you still dont know the brand name or whether it's a plasma or an LCD, It could be a Pioneer Kuro or a Vizio or anything in between. Should I ask what his addy is so I can go see for myself? Hmmm.... Nah if he isnt bright enough to even what know brand or type of tv he has odds are he didnt buy a good one. Me. ok thanks for the info. Him. well do you want it? Me. No I think I will pass.

In my mind it would be the same as listing an ad for a car for sale and not knowing whether its a Ford or Toyota or what the it hell it is.

Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D

That's funny but not good for you the potential buyer....I bet a lot of people are in this guys state....I remember when we bought our 1st color TV...I did a lot of research for my parents and suggested that they buy a 19" Magnavox with something new called a 'comb' filter because it improved the resolution of the picture. They had 'no idea' what I was talking about...and I was maybe 17 or 18 at the time. But at least they could have told you it was a Magnavox!

Most people walk into a place like BB and are more or less at the mercy of their sales people...if they are LUCKY they'll get a young kid who may actually 'know' something about the set..be interested in what he's selling and the people he's selling to. I know they're out there. Because I had a long discussion with a kid in their AV room who told me that he was running a 5 channel Adcom with his set up and seemed to know his stuff!

But, yeah, talking to some people is a total waste of time.

Yeah it was a strange uncomfortable conversation allright, I think the clincher was he seemed put off by me asking him to take the time to bother to go see what brand it was. So I just simply gave up out of frustration.

CL sellers are sure a hit or miss! I emailed a guy, somewhat locally to me, about an assortment of "various raw speakers". I asked in the email for brands, models, pics. He replied back almost immediately and said 'Look, if you want them come get them, I am not wasting my time taking pics or listing what brands they are".

    I never replied back.

A lot of them don't want you to know. They sell used crap for more than new prices.
They prefer you to show up and buy. Plus 60 % of the CL users
need help tying their shoe laces. Blurry picture, poor communication skills,
and just plain laziness drive the place. And they never pull the ad after selling
    the damn thing.

Why don't you just help that poor guy? I always ask about brand name and model number and suggest to look for a sticker on the back. People are usually able to find the sticker and tell me what I want.

I've had people do that to me. I reply by saying that i'll be there to pick them up, and that i'll bring 4 bills with me to pay him with, but i have no idea what the denomination of each will be. Or that i'm willing to trade for them, i'll bring something, but it'll be a surprise.

Ha... as a frequent seller on CL, I can say that when people talk to me, they are like, "Wow... you are so easy to talk with..." I always am kinda shocked, then realize after reading another post about dumbass CL people that I must not be the norm.

You have to wade thru the crap on there sometimes to find the good deals... but they are out there, that is for sure!

Sometimes I think it might be some guy thats wife is making/wanting him to sell something etc. And he doesn't want to sell anything, so he acts like an @ss to turn off potential buyers so he can keep his toys!

Yeah, this is my theory! :p

I've run into a similar problem while looking for bicycles. The MOST important thing a seller needs to list is the size of the frame. I don't care if it's a $10k carbon fiber beauty or a $50 garage beater - if it doesn't fit, it doesn't matter.

    Snow,
Hang up and thank your mom and dad for expending more energy in your upbringing then the mere act of making you!!!

I always call people in the state of mind that none of them will be wanting to talk to me about their MENSA membership. Doing this ensures that I am never diappointed, and sometimes mildly surprised.

    Better luck next time.

Thaks for the well wishes on finding a TV. I am now starting to think it will be a much easier task to see whats available online at sears, walmart, samsclub etc then do my research online then simply go down and pick it up. Actually I dont expect most people to know what model their tv is simply because to most people it isnt important but I do get put out by those that dont want to be bothered by having to go look to see what brand it is.

It was funny in a way because he seemed to feel that the fact that it was 4" thick and that his friends seemed to feel that it had a good picture was all the info I needed to know :p

Dan check out QVC. My son is a videographer there and they are always having great sales on flat screen TVs. That's where I got my Sharp Aquos. He always gives me a heads up on pending great sales plus I can get his discount.

Some people amaze me. It's like he can't be bothered to find out what it is that he's selling. He just wants it gone.

I can understand not knowing the model number of your TV...but not knowing the brand? Practically every TV on the face of the earth has the brand name right on the front of the TV, in big chrome letters. Odds are, he wouldn't have even had to get up to check the brand. He would have just had to turn his head...lol

How do you move two weeks, do you put another in front of them? or is that some new measurement of distance that I don't know about. And why does the two weeks have to sell his phone number?

I'm mean. I had to send him an e-mail.

If you include the model number, and Brand it may help you sell this. You may also want some one who is fluent in the English language to retype this for you. It is very hard to understand what you are saying in the ad.

If you would like I could retype your ad for you for a small fee and make it so people who Nativity speak/read English can understand your ad.
