Sears has paint on sale

I know some of you are like me and working on the house with new construction.
Well, if you need to paint walls, Sears Easy Living brand paint is on sale. What would normally cost me between 30 and 35 bucks a gallon is going from 18 to 26 a gallon.
The Easy Living stuff is decent paint. The results are very good and it's very forgiving with mistakes and such. I've done all my painting with it so far and I've been impressed. Finish is just as good as BEHR or Glidden or Dutch Boy. They are cheaper than the other "store brands" like Lowes' Valspar (which is also pretty nice paint BTW). So if you need paint, head on over to Sears.
Oh and the color palette is very wide. You should be able to find something you like in the rack. They can match a color if you don't want something in the rack. But my experience is that the color matching isn't the best. If you want to match a color, head over to M*A*B or Sherwin Williams. They are much, much better at it than any of the big chain stores. But you'll pay for it too. Then again, the results will be worth it.

That's not saying much, all those brands are very poor quality.
????
What would be "good quality" then? 'Cause aside from Sherwin Williams, M*A*B, Benjamin Moore and other stand alone paint stores that charge you about $100 a gallon, I'm finding it difficult to come up with other brands. Oh, I know, "Ralph Lauren", right?
BTW, BEHR usually picks up top ratings with many quality surveyors including the much loved Consumer Reports.Expert Moron Extraordinaire

within every major brand of paint.... there are several levels of paint. entry, mid, mid premium and premium and contractor grade. .. some brands may have more levels. but you get the idea.
so you can't say one brand is bad.... you may have only used their entry level quality and it may not be on the same par with another brands mid or premium paint. but paint on sale is worth seeking out.
we had our house painted last year by collegepro.com and they got us a mid premium quality paint for a lower price.. because of a deal they have with Sherwin Williams.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

Wish I would have known about it this morning. Bought 4 gallons at Dunn Edwards today. Been painting bedrooms all day.

Well, SEARS decided to stop selling paint in department and "Essentials" stores. Essentials are basically Kmarts but with SEARS branding. So the only places you can find paint are a select few "Home" stores and SEARS Hardware stores. Since I'm on a deadline, I didn't have time to make the 40 minute trip to the closest SEARS Hardware. It's really only about a 20 minute trip but with all the stupid traffic and people doing 30 MPH in a 50 zone, it takes a while.
So I took a color swatch I made over to Home Depot and got some of the BEHR premium paint to match what I had from SEARS. Since this is a good chance to compare both brands side by side, I figured I'd post results.
The Easy Living covers better, honestly. It has taken me only 2 coats to get complete coverage on the Easy Living. The EL is thicker and harder to spread, doesn't coat in a single roll or brush stroke so it takes bit more work. However, the coat is even because of all the work you have to do to spread it. The finish is literally, the same as the BEHR. I mean, literally. You can't tell the difference between the two.
The BEHR paint is easy to spread, goes on easy too. But it's thin. For the EL's two coats, I have had to do a 3rd coat. I am waiting for that to dry and determine if I need a 4th to cover as completely as the EL paint. The EL gallon goes alot farther than the BEHR. The color match was quite good. I won't say spot on because I could probably get a better match at a Sherwin Williams with all their fancy equipment. But none of them are open today. But the BEHR match is good. The color deepens as you put more coats on. It's close now with 2 coats, I think the 3rd coat will be the money and I'm hoping I don't need to throw a 4th coat on.
Both are good paints. I would highly recommend that you stick with one brand through all the rooms you are painting, no matter what color. This is because of the differences I mentioned above. They can affect results just because of the painter's skill. I think the EL is more forgiving than the BEHR in that respect. As far as durability, I can't speak to that yet. I will say though that the BEHR paint was less than $22 a gallon while the EL's typical price was around $30 a gallon. That difference adds up. But, at the same time, you will likely need less EL paint to cover the same area as the BEHR. In the end, it might even out. Either paint is a good, quality buy so do not drive yourself nuts choosing. You really can't go wrong with either one.
BTW, both were the "premium" levels of paint and the BEHR paint stinks more. The EL has an odor as well but it's not as strong and dissipates sooner.
As far as why I needed more. I used a tan paint for my hallways, part of the living room and part of the dining room. I have just over half a gallon left over and I needed to paint a couple sections of walls in the office/library I'm working on where bookshelves will not cover. I did not have enough paint to cover the lavender paint that was on the walls and get all the sections covered that I needed to cover. So I had to get more paint. I didn't screw up, I just didn't see far enough in the future for this last room to be finished.Expert Moron Extraordinaire

Oh, hey, handy tip!
You should always have a bit of paint left over for the colors you paint your rooms so you can repair damage from stuff like kids, moving, rogue Wii remote, etc...
However, sometimes that doesn't happen or you manage to avoid damage long enough that the saved paint is no longer any good.
What do you do then? Well, you can paint match but sometimes you don't have a large enough piece of good enough quality to match. So before you put your paint and primer away, grab a piece of left over sheet rock or plywood or even cardboard if nothing else is handy. Put a few coats of white primer on so that you get a nice, even, all white surface. Then do two or three coats of the various colors you painted your rooms. Whatever matches what you painted. Yes paint fades but if you make these boards/swatches the same time you paint the rooms, the color matching will be the same age as the paint on the walls. It's hard to compensate for things like sun damage but, with modern paints, fade and UV damage isn't as prevalent as it used to be. So make these swatches and put them in a box somewhere for safe keeping. When you need paint to fix a boo boo or maybe you just want to repaint for that new look, just pull the appropriate swatch out of the box and take it to your favorite paint store and have them match it.
I have 5 different colors so I have 5 different pieces of sheetrock with each paint color on them just for this purpose. The ceilings are white so they don't matter.
The other thing too is that it usually helps to choose a color from the boards rather than match a color. That way you have a catalog number and if you need additional paint, you can go to the same place you got the previous paint and give them the color number and they should be able to easily reproduce that color from the color database.
Yeah, I know, seems like common sense. When I was in HD today getting paint and I handed the clerk my color swatch (5" by 14" chunk of sheetrock with color on it) the lady waiting for her paint at the counter commented that it was a great idea and she never thought of doing that. So if I can help maybe just one person, that'd be grand.Expert Moron Extraordinaire

Just be careful with the Behr paint with primer built in. If you follow up with a second coat, especially along the edges (ceilings, window trim, etc...) you can end up with a much darker shade than the original coat. I thought I had mixed up my paints until a couple other friends had similar experiences and Home Depot actually admitted that it happens. I don't mind Behr, but I do think Shermin Williams is worth the extra expense. Benjamin Moore is just way too pricey for my budget.
-
I used to buy paint at the box stores. Never again. I have had far better luck with Pittsburgh Paints or Sherwin Williams.
I can get consistent pigment in the paint from Gallon to gallon. even year to year. The results on the wall have been better than Glidden, Behr, Valspar, Dutch Boy. Results meaning spread ability, number of coats required, how well does the paint take a scrubbing etc.
As mentioned before, anyone can open a business / contractor account at these stores and you will usually save some $'s over what the box stores will charge. For example, I just bought 2 gallons of exterior mid grade paint from Pittsburgh. The cost was $15.80 / gallon. The same cost for BEHR is around $30 / gallon.
I always wondered why the pros never shop at the box stores for their paint. After switching to Pittsburgh Paints exclusively, I know the answer.

A neat tip I've heard from some people about paint colors is to write down the mixture (nowadays they all come with a printout on the lid that tells you how much of each dye they use, so it's easier to reproduce) on the back of a switchplate cover in the same room you painted. THat way if you ever need to repaint, you know exactly where the information is written down.If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

I get bent out of shape when morons like opus obviously don't read my post and then make a snarky comment to me when if they had read the post, they would see how unnecessary theirs is. I've had the same issue with Behr paint from Home Depot, 4 coats and still lousy coverage. Last couple of times I used Pittsburgh paint from Menards. Better coverage with just one coat than four with Behr.
-
I've had nothing but good luck with Valspar, or whatever the premium blend is at Lowe's....with paint, like most things, you get what you pay for.
I painted the Rancho de No Concerno 11 years ago when we bought it with Valspar and it has held up well and still looks good. Thumbs up.
For matching purposes, though, I keep the printout lables on the lid with the original paint chip.

I worked my way through college selling paint at Sears. I sold thousands of gallons over a three year period. I have a pretty good idea of what is or is not good. I now use either Glidden or Behr. Well, what do you expect when you're trying to paint over bright red or neon green??
I keed, I keed...
BTW, HomeDepot kind of messed up on one of our color choices last year (they thought we asked for 2 gals. of the same color), so we called Behr Cust. Svc. and they said they would send us a coupon for a free gallon if HD wouldn't take it back. They did, no questions asked. Maybe they saw my drivers' license?!:cool:So, are you willing to put forth a little effort or are you happy sitting in your skeptical poo pile?
