AVR "tone" nullified by external amp?

While responding in another thread, this question crossed my mind... People often describe AVRs as warm, bright, or neutral. So, let's say this warm, bright, or neutral amp has pre-outs and you add an external amp.

Is the warmth, brightness, or neutral sound of the AVR eliminated by the addition of the amp? In other words, where does a system's tonal quality come from? Is it predominantly influenced by the amp stage, the pre-amp stage, or equally by both?

    Both equally

As our very own Madmax says......

Yeah, guess I should have known this would be the answer, since I've recently experienced the difference made by an IC upgrade. Hey, BGE just replaced the utility pole closest to my house, and I swear my system sounds better. ;)

Don't let if affect your amp purchase. An amp in most cases will make a difference.

Oh, I'm not in the market for an amp. I know mine made a difference. I was just wondering if my AVR, in its pre-amp role, was still playing a role in the overall tone of my system, or if its tonal quality was eclipsed by my amps. I guess I answered my own question when I used the word "system." Thanks! :)
