I am on the ledge............

The ledge of Audiophile suicide. No matter what I do I can't get the sound I want. I have 18 Polk speakers. The cheepest of them all Mon. 7a's - $100 - sound the best. I have several pricey speakers. I have somewhat decent amps but I am sick of buying expensive things. The 2.3's now need mid-drivers after I spend a bundle for them and just ordered the RDO's. I am on the verge of getting rid of it all and getting Bose speakers with Emotiva amps and the thinest speker ( mispelled on purose) an Emotiva amp and calling it a day.

I need F1 to come in a dream to me like Ben Kenobi did to Luke Skywalker on a near death experience and talk me out of this.

Don't be afraid to venture beyond Polk, it's a big world, lots of good stuff out there.

What gear/speakers have you heard that you really liked other than your own? Maybe you just like a unique sound, and don't need all the mumbo jumbo we go crazy over. You might live longer if that's the case.

I liked Cerwin Vegas in the 80's. Until I heard JBL... and then... and then... and then...

Time to start auditioning speakers since they have the greatest impact on the sound you get. I agree with the previous comment. There is definately better stuff out there than Polk. Take a sample CD with music you know well and start listening to new brands. I'm betting you can find something to suit your tastes.

    Tony,

My advice would be to pick the speaker that you like the most or think that will satisfy your needs and then focus on making those speakers sound there best with appropriate mods and then match them up with complementary amps, pre-amps, cables etc. Synergy and simplicity will get you to where you want to be.

Sell something. One really good pair of speakers beats a dozen mediocre ones.

I think F1nut could go over and show you what's wrong or what you need to replace or move.

I have found after 10 yrs. of collecting speakers, amps and everything in between, that there are certain characteristics for each brand.

Do you want clear, bright sound?
Do you want soft, laid back sound?
    Do you want neutral sound?

Alot of us have alot of experience with different brands styles. Just tell us what's wrong or lacking in your present system and I'm sure you'll get great advice from the forum members. ;)

Nobody should have to hear bad sound since FM came into being.
Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.

What happened to the guy that started this thread??

    "I can't BELIVE THIS !!!!!!!!!!!" and couldn't spell believe...

If you were closer I could help you unload them :D

Buying used is tough and its not easy to audition vintage gear. I would say stay the course on the 2.3s if you can get the parts you need. You have come this far, invest a little patience to a least give them a listen...in the big picture eat ramen noodles for a couple of weeks and see if it pays off...life is a journey not a destination...

I think that we all have gone through the "something better" once the newness wears off. Now matter what you look at it will be hard to beat the Polk SDA's for the price point. Ugrading them makes them even better. Hell, for more mid and lower end bass, I wired a MFW-15 sub with each one. Plenty of mid now!

    +1

Two of the best pairs of speakers I have ever heard are not Polks (even tho I do LOVE my SDAs). One was a pair of Sonist Concerta 3, and the other is a pair that was totally handcrafted (no nameplates on 'em... yet;)) with custon cabs and X-overs. Both powered by different amps in different rooms, but both sounded amazing for what they are.

You have everything to gain by listening to different gear until you find what you really like.
So, are you willing to put forth a little effort or are you happy sitting in your skeptical poo pile?

IF, you do decide to get rid of the 2.3s please let another Marylander (me) have a shot at them!

    Believe it or not...

There are speakers out there beyond Polk...

I owned a whole lot of Polk speakers, chasing a sound - until I realized that all Polks speakers had a very similar sound -- although different.

They have a midbass boom to them which to me masks midrange clarity - and it took me a while to find a speaker that had the midrange I liked...

Funny you say that Jess, I've been trying to convince the wife for awhile now after re-arranging the room and having to stick my speaks in a corner. Man,was I pissed. Anyway, those looking for better sound in a given room,as Jess points out, setting them up on the longest wall in the room usually, but not allways, gives best results.

Thanks guys, just a little P.O.'ed.

Good advice Scott. I am going to stick them out. Just wish it wasn't so pricey.

F1, it's going to be very hard to do that. The RDO's should be here any minute. Hopefully that will lessen the pain. lol

6513's will be ordered tom. to be ready for the gathering. Bad thing is that they are visual a bit different. Going to replace two of them in one speaker and hopefully it won't be that noticable on the other set.
