Two passengers aboard a cruise ship were killed when 26-foot waves crashed into the vessel Wednesday, officials said. As many as fourteen others were injured.

The Greek Louis Cruise Lines ship was off the French port of Marseille when it was hit by "abnormal" waves, some more than 26 feet (9 meters) high, cruise line spokesman Michael Maratheftis told CNN.

As a result, five windows in public areas were smashed and two passengers, a German and an Italian, were killed, he said.

Fourteen others were treated for light injuries, Maratheftis said.

The vessel, the Louis Majesty, was sailing under a Maltese flag and traveling from Barcelona, Spain, to Genoa, Italy, the Greek Public Ministry of the Mercantile Marine told CNN.

The ship had 1,350 passengers and 580 crew on board, the ministry said.

After being struck, the cruise ship turned around and was heading back to port in Barcelona.

Rouge waves are a ****! 26 feet high???!!!

That would freak the hell out of me, I don't care WHAT size ship i'm in.

On a side note...why is it valuable information as to what flag the ship was flying?

Pfffft! I've seen much bigger than that in a typhoon in between San Diego & HI.
It amazes me, even now, how that ship didn't friggin bust in half.

Not that I have ever been aboard a cruise ship or very far off any coast , for that matter. So someone enlighten me as to how you cannot see a 26 ft wave coming ??? Isn't there radar equipment or something of the like that can detect HUGH waves ????

Those rogue waves comes out of nowhere without warning and just slams into ships.

There was a show on, I believe, Discovery Channel and they interviewed passengers who almost got "washed out" of their rooms on the 8th level of this giant cruise ship. The 8th level was approximately 80 feet above sea level.....scary stuff.

According to the entry of rogue wave at wikipedia, the ocenliner QE2 was hit by a rogue wave 95 feet tall.

What's funny, is, that until just a couple of years ago, everyone thought that these waves were just sailors tall tales. Just like the giant squid.
But let a few civilians get washed overboard, and NOW it's believable:rolleyes:

Ya just can't mess with the ocean, as Bill Cosby says, "everytime someone goes jumping into the ocean it throws them back onto the beach."
