I need a laptop

looking for something portable, I will be doing some band music with it, midi and usb, likely using Cakewalkl or some such program, some internet browsing. Apple or Windows based fairly flexable, no junk, the more storage the better but needs to be at least a mid-line model with wi-fi and some sort of writer. so please hit me with something you might want to move that might fit the bill.
puters are not my strong point by any means but I do use them and have a bit of knowledge, so try to explain a bit or expect questions for acronyms.

are you wanting a New or Preowned/used one...

As a point of reference, I think you would need to spend about $600 - $700 to get a good quality one brand new.
If you can find a good deal at tech bargains dot com, the Dell Vostro 1520 with upgraded 1440 x 900 anti-glare screen and webcam is a good choice (probably low $600 + tax range): http://www.studentbuyingguide.com/2009/05/dell-vostro-1520-review/
Lenovo T400 or T500 (usually just choose base configuration with integrated graphics on left side of webpage, and make sure you get good resolution screen and webcam if you want); probably high $600 - $700 range with 15% of coupon often floating around the web; T500 is more of a desktop replacement http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=365492
If you have larger budget, current generation Macbook or Macbook Pro are great choices (screen is supposed to have better viewing angles than previous generations and you can dual boot Windows and even get something like VMWare Fusion and run both operating systems at same time). Watch Apple refurb store (people say products are like new condition and come with full warranty): http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/mac?mco=OTY2ODY3Nw
If portability is very important (like college student that always keeps laptop in backpack), I'd say probably focus on 13.3 or 14.1 inch widescreen laptops; 15.4 inch is primarily more of a desktop replacement with occasional portability.
If you do decide to go used, here is a much more active computer hardware marketplace: http://forums.anandtech.com/forumdisplay.php?f=19
Good luck!
