got a new yamaha r-v1105. currently have an onkyo tx-sr503. the obvious diff. between is onkyo is 7.1 and yam. is not. yam has 85 watts to 65 for onkyo. the yam has pre out and onkyo does not. later i think i will be hooking up an amp to yam for my dcm fronts.
questions.
1.would yamaha be a much better piece than onkyo.{getting in cabinet and swapping components is a pain especially getting over back surgery, but would do it for better sound.}
2.would separate amp from pre out on yamaha be worth the expense.{disabled vet living on va check but will save if worth it}
3.if i add amp, should i stick with yamaha.
dcm tf400s front.
kef carina II rear
polk cs2 center
yamaha sw5 sub
thanks guys

i was also wondering if instead of using optical to receiver and hdmi to tv.(neither receiver has hdmi)could a component cable from direct sat hd box thru yamaha to 1080I sony crt be likely to improve video. the yammy does have an onscreen display but would picture be better straight from direct box, or is yammy likely to improve pichumpty dumpty was pushed

I am not familar with your Onkyo model however I have had one of these Yamaha 1105's for quite a while. There is good reserve power in this unit, you may find that it drives your speakers much easier, has the strength to supply the heavier bass loads without running out of headroom. Perhaps we say more 'dynamic'.
I run mine in an everday listening surround system with a small sub and it packs plenty of power in my large family room.

finally got around to hooking the yammy up. the difference is distinct. not just more power, the rears are much more distinct and the center blends much better instead of being either overpowering or dissapearing, depending on what you are listening to. anyone out there wondering if the posts you see here about the difference the receiver makes are true. THEY ARENT KIDDING. later on, since this thing has pre outs i think i might get a separate amp. anyone have ideas on whether i should worry about keeping it in the yamaha line or does it usually matter as far as the sound.humpty dumpty was pushed
