The Build up that Mahler does is just incredable. You can really test your system.

I heard the 4th conducted live at the boston BSO 20 years ago and the conductor had the horn player leave the stage and go through a door down a corridor. The conductor walked to the door at the side of the stage and conducted the quiet part where the soft forlorn horn plays. It was the most magical moment ever. \

Resurrection, coming back from a far away place.

    wow

Try to hear it live some time.

    Man, you ain't kiddin'!

It kind of reminds me of the Telarc 1812 Overture on how you set the volume to a certain point to enjoy the music in its entirety and then all of a sudden the crescendo blows the walls out of the house. I thank the audio Gods that my system handled it. I set the volume at the start and never touched it for both discs.

I'll have to go see them live, now. I really enjoyed that.

Glad you enjoy it.....I've had it since day one when it came out.
So it's a original Telarc....back when you could find em all over.

I recently got this copy...thus I sold the one you got from me.

To me and I have 4 recordings of the fourth the dynamic range is key for Malher.

I saw Ozawa at the BSO and it was horrible. The sound level would go from soft to loud very quickly. There was no in between. No gradual change in the dynamics. I think he is deaf. Obadio was the best at the BSO with the dynamics and speed control and by conducting from the side stage door. Bernstein was very good but he was a little to quick to change the sound level.

It's really all a matter of taste to what gives you the goose bumps.

Try to listen to the fourth. It is the easiest. The ending is the best with the vocals.

Probably not enough to get ya all quieefy.
Now and then I'll cycle out a CD I've had for years for a remastered award winning recording.
The EMI Recordings Of The Century have the [ART] logo on them thus they were remastered at Abby Studios and noise shaped via the Prism SNS system for optimum sound quality.

My new copy was recorded in 1986 and remastered in 2006.

If ya want some nice additions to your collection....watch for reviews on these EMI Great Recordings Of The Century.
WARNING: Some of the real early recording are crap.....the re-mastering didn't help em much....thats why I say to watch for reviews.
The ones that are great are AWSOME......the ones that are crap aren't worth the CD they were recorded on!!

By early I mean like the 1930's and 40's mostly.....hard to improve many of the recordings from that early. NOT all of em tho....now and then they get a worthy recording to work with.
I have heard some 1950's remastered works that were horrable.
All depends on how good the original recording was done....if they can clean it up.
