Hi All. This may seem basic but whatever - here goes. I am awaiting delivery of a new samsung 46 lcd/led tv tomorrow. I started to set up my new system with my old tv tyonight to just get ready. Have a yamaha rx 465 receiver and polk speakers. I hooked up temporarily the scientifc atlanta cable box from the HDMI connection directly to the receiver to get the sound but could not get any video from component or composite line to tv. I CAN get picture only from the composite video jack on the cable box directly to the tv.
My question is this: WHY? I thought everything can go thru the receiver. will that only work when i hook up my hdtv and run an hdmi cable from the receiver to the tv or will that be a problem too. Why no picture thru the receiver. Is it the tv? any ideas from you tecnos out there??????????

Basic questions not answered here include...

....Did you configure the cable box to output via the HDMI port and with the proper resolution- 720P, 1080i or 1080P?

Did you slect the correct HDMI video input on the TV as a source?

thanks for the responses. Fuyrther questions. what do you mean the avr only passes audio. wont it pass video once I hook up an HDMI cable to my new tv. wont the hdmi cable pass along the audio and video connection? and when i hook up a blue ray player by hdmi to the receiver wont that pass along the video to the tv as well?

I'm not familiar at all with your receiver, but some will only output what the input is. IOW, HDMI in has to go out to the set via HDMI also, component in from the box has to go out to the set via component, etc. The receiver can't convert the signal from one type of input to another type of output, like HDMI in to composite (or component) out, they basically just pass it through without processing. FWIW
