SDA room placement

Hello everyone,

having had my 1.2tls for a stiff year now, I find myself in the situation that I am planning an addition to the (newly acquired) house, which incidentally will include a new living room. It goes without saying that this will be adapted to suit the listening / movie area.
So, I am wondering, since there are folks here with vast oceans of placement knowledge, is there a golden rule for placement? Mainly I am unsure about bigger rooms, is there such a thing as too large? How far apart can the speakers be placed? Or is it enough to keep the relation of listening distance to speaker spacing while 'enlarging' the placement? Up until now, all my listening rooms have been on the small side, so this is the first time I will have the chance to 'get it right'.
All input is appreciated, I am still a newbie in regards to listening to these :)

Cheers,

Bjorn

From what I hear, the bigger the room, the better. Just make sure you have at least 3 or 4 feet from the speakers to the outside walls and I think just about any distance between the speakers will work. Its my understanding that wider separation is better for the big boys.

FYI, this is some great info on where you need to sit relative to the speakers, which is something I would keep in mind when designing a listening room:

Try to create an equal triangle. The speakers should be the same distance from each other as they are from the listener. Do not toe them in. Also have them from about 3-8 inches from the wall.

Thanks for the replies, good information there.
Boundary question then, is there anything wrong with spacing the speakers 14' with a listening position at around the same distance from the speaker plane?

Try it and if you don't have a good center stage move them to 12' and so on.

    Bjorn,

I have my 3.1TLs at 12' apart and the center image is pretty darn good although probably not as good as if they were at 8'. The stereo and SDA effect is absolutley outstanding though. Like Ben said, start at 14' and work your way in until you find the best sound for what you are looking for. Great advice from Ben.

Taken from a recent Audioholics reply regarding "Club Polk" and Polk speakers:
"I'm yet to hear a Polk speaker that merits more than a sentence and 60 seconds discussion." :\
My response is: If you need 60 seconds to respond in one sentence, you probably should't be evaluating Polk speakers.....
