Polk monitor 10 value - m i n t

Hello,
I still have my Monitor 10B's from 1984 and I am trying to convince my sister to buy her son a pair because he loves mine. He is 18 and it is cool to see someone of that age group that is into vinyl and 2-channel audio not like the typical kid that wants to listen to a ipod dock on some all in one piece of junk system.

I found in a local paper a pair of monitor 10B's he bought in 1984, they are MINT and look almost like the day they came out the box. The bottom panel has a few scratches when he did not have the speakers on the stands.

He also replaced the tweeters with the RDO 194's last year. He wants $250 for the pair and with the stands. The drivers look great and do not leak air. I pushed the radiator in and it took about 5 seconds before the 2 drivers moved back but still had more to move back and would hold that position until I took my hand off the radiator.

Is this a good price or should I try to talk him down and see what happens.

THANKS

In my opinion that is pretty high a price. There is a pair of minty, first owner pair on ebay, that were under $100 last I looked. A really decent pair can go for $150.
The RDO- do add some value. They would cost you $100 new from Polk, so with those maybe $200?
Course, You could put the RDO's in your speakers if you wanted to, too..

Well,....some will probably say it is a bit on the high side,...but seeing as they have the stands and the tweeters have already been replaced...(I would still whip out $200 cash and see if he bites)

.....I say, be the super cool uncle and buy them for him yourself. Have him come over to check out your new aquisiton and when he least expects it....tell him to take them home. Just remind him that he HAS to let you know if he ever wants to get rid of them.

250 for a pair of Monitor 10s is a bit high, you could pick up a pair of SDA 2A/B for that and even less..

So, yes, DO HAGGLE..about the price...

Cash talks. Always go, and then whip out the bills.

I picked up a pair of Monitor 7s recently, and the stands (though you could make them yourself) are really an added bonus.

As others have said, NEW the RDO-194s are $100 a pair, but used is used.

Finally, it all depends on your time horizon. If you're willing to wait, who knows what will come by, but if you're buying them as a present, I'd say go with $200 cash in hand and see what happens. Stock Monitor 10s, I think $100 is about "fair" if they're mint, add in the tweeters, and you're at $200.

Patience my friend ! Monitor 10's are available on Craigslist every so often and usually between $100-$150. I bought a pair of mint 10 w. Peerless tweets for $125. I agree that the new generation listens to what is called music on tin cans hooked up to iPods. That's why I bought 70's audio systems for both my sons who are in their late 20's. You can put together a system with Marantz, Sansui, Pioneer or Kenwood with some Polk monitors for under $200. Good Luck

Do your's have the new RDO tweeters? That is what the speakers the OP (Original Poster ) has been asking about. IF you are wanting to sell yours, please post your own tread in "For Sale" Thread.
