First Time Home Buyer Credit...

I purchased a house back in July and Ive been in an ongoing battle since then with the IRS...

I send in the amended Tax form to get my credit faster...

They reply back asking for a form that shows I purchased the house about 3 months later -- showing my name, the old owners, all signatures, yada yada yada...

I send it in and they claim that this is not enough to prove I bought a house - even though they requested that and just that...

So then they request I send in my latest statement and utility bill..

I send that in and I have not received a response. I am going to call them tomorrow - but at this point I hate the IRS even more than I did before this...

I pay ALOT of taxes, way more than 8,000 every year -- and this 8,000 is pretty crucial to the remodeling of my house, particularly to the bathroom....

Thoughts? What can I do to prove to the government that I own a house?

Not to mention I filed a tax return this year that had tax write offs involving said house which they had no problem approving (makes no sense)

The government is so ineffecient..

The government's holding up your check because they're waiting for me to pay my back taxes.

Sorry about that. Check's in the mail.

weird. we bought our house in july filed our amended return in September and got our check in late oct. early nov? Of course I sent in my settlement statement when I filed the amended return initially. when did you file the amended return? I hear that after about Nov or Dec they were probably not going to fill those requests until probably after this years tax deadline ie April, not sure how true that is, but its what I heard. I know they've had a lot of Fraud filings so depending on whos reviewing your return, they might be real sticklers... sorry you're having to deal with it.. of course its the start of tax season too so they're really not going to rush it right now.

That sucks. We bought our house in October but didnt bother to send it in early. We had to mail in our taxes because of it...so were going to be waiting another 2-4 weeks to get it back :(

You have to send the HUD Settlement Statement with the form.

Anyways, like with the other thread...speak to a tax preparer or an accountant who handles such things to get it done right.

Tons more scrutiny when it is on an ammended form. people use ammended forms to pull a variety of shenanigans so they probe every nook and cranny of what your changing. doesnt make it less frustrating i'm sure, its just the system

I'm thinking utility bill, Deed(stamped by county or whoever registers deeds down there), closing Docs, and a property tax bill from the town should do the trick. covers all the bases to me

The IRS is made of people. There are bad examiners and less-bad examiners. Believe it or not, some people at the IRS are decent humans; others, not so much.

From my experience, it really is luck of the draw in who you get.

This is why the wife and I didn't amend. We thought it would be more hassle to do so than wait to file '09 taxes and get the credit. From what I've been hearing we made the right decision.
