Hey Gang,
Wife and i have some coin stashed, first-time home buyers,$8000 tax credit, low rates, and ready to own!:D Have looked at about 10 homes here on Aquidneck Island in little Rhody (Not cheap:() with slim pickens, LOL.

We attended an open house on a property tonight, priced right up our alley: 2 story colonial, 8000 sq ft lot, 3 bed, 1.5 bath, 1 stall garage, oil fed forced hot-air, 100 amp service, etc, etc. (To good to be true!)

Well............a worker hired by the homeowners to replace basement windows, accidentally ruptured the copper supply line from the oil tank to the furnace, dumping about 200 gallons of home heating oil into the basement! D.E.M. got involved, a contractor for cleanup, one-quarter of the basement slab, gravel, and soil dug up for contamination, and a stench beyond belief!

Any Forum members here ever dealt with a home heating oil spill? If so, how long can i expect the fumes to last? should i stay away? look for something else? Its priced so right and very tempting. Note: current home owner is dealing with cleanup: new slab, oil tank, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not personally, but a friend of mine had a leak about 15 years ago. The house still reeks to this day. I have to wash my jacket if I'm over there for more than 10 minutes or so to get rid of the smell. He doesn't notice it anymore.

Unless they have come up with some amazing new tech, I wouldn't touch it.

You will find something better I'm sure of it...Pass.
I wish I would have passed on my 2nd house but got caught up in what I thought was a "deal" and pulled the trigger.

Your blood is flowin' and you want a house so bad you can taste it, but the smell will haunt you. Just my $0.02.

Only you'll know for sure what to do, but this is a buyers market. I wouldn't settle on a problem house. Even if the seller agrees to do all the necessary repairs they can screw you by half-assing it. As long as you're not in a rush, you can afford to be really picky as a buyer.

You should end up with a house you'll both love and you should be able to get that house for a lot less.

Good luck with whatever you do.

Run away, that happened here and they ended up buying back the house and tearing it down due to the smell.

walk away.. you never know what problems may arise later on.... enviromental laws will only get tougher on things like spills, fumes, contamination in the future.. think of where we were 20 or 30 years ago.. and what tough laws we have now.

plus, you should not have to deal with the stench of that.

also, once the sale goes though, and you are the legal owner.. it's now YOUR problem.. no longer the sellers problem.

Walk as fast as you can away.

+1... My grandfather had a spill in his basement of maybe 100 gallons. There were places in the basement that smelled for as long as I can remember, probably 20 years or so. Good Luck...

One of those heavy duty ozone machines might be your only hope, but after reading what everyone else has had to say in regards to longevity of odor, I'd pass...

    run, dont walk, away.......quickly.

I feel horrible for those homeowners and this is why I wouldnt touch a house with Oil heat with a 10 foot cattle prod.

selling one with no issues is a pain in the balls....much less if an issue pops up. Gas or even electric for the win.
