DIY fan speed control using pot/rheostat

Has anyone tried this? This is a regular 80mm, 12V fan, driven by walwart. I imagine soldering a rheostat in series to the +ve would allow me to do this. Perhaps one of the drawback is the pot might get hot, but then again, I could be wrong.

I want to KISS on this, as long as it works. Btw, the fans sitting on top of the gears (I have two of them cooling one each).

ps: Rat Shack items would be preferable since I can grab them quicker.
