connecting a new receiver

I am connecting a new yamaha rxv-465 receiver is rated at 8 ohms impedance, can you use speakers rated at 4 ohm impedance which I have currently or do I now have to buy new speakers rated at 8 ohms. Even if I do buy new speakers, can I use the old ones temp. or will it ruin the new receiver?:??????

I do not know the answer for this, but on my receiver I have switch that allows 8ohms and 4-6 ohms. Maybe yours does too, but I would not run 4ohms speakers at 8 ohms. My opinion only.Sharp LC-80uq17u

Good advice above, do yourself (and your speakers) a favor and get an external amp, if your AVR has preouts, and call it a day. Running 4 ohm speakers off an 8 ohm AVR isn't the best idea in the world and eventhough it is possible, it is only a matter of time before something gets upset and breaks. Looking at the back panel of your AVR, I don't see any preouts, so your only option would be to get one that does, or buy some 8 ohm speakers. In the meantime be very careful with the volume knob and look into a new AVR.
