hooking up a powered subwoofer

i want to connect a powered subwoofer to my yamaha receiver. the polk subwoofer rm6750 has 2 inputs l and r and says instructions say you can plug the rca cable into either input. is this ok or do you need an adapter/splitter making two ends. does it matter???????????

    Welcome to CP.

You can connect to either one. The sub is a mono connection so a splitter is not needed. It does not hurt to use a splitter if you want though.

thanks have a second question. If i now have the yamaha receiver which has imp. at 8ohms and old speakers attached which are ratedat 4 ohms, can I use these speakers temporarily until I get new speakers or will it ruin my receiver

Speakers don't attach to the input. Not sure what you're getting at. Does the receiver state you can't use less than 8 ohm speakers?

am not sure what the new receiver state4s - dont have it yet. I was told that if the receiver is rated at 8 ohms impedance, then you can't use speakers rated at 4 ohm impedance. Is that true and do I now have to buy new speakers. Even if I do buy new speakers, can I use the old ones temp. or will it ruin the receiver

I am not 100% certain on the impedance questions. I think that you will be ok as long as you watch the volume and do not attempt to turn it up to loud. I would not take my word on it though. There are tons of smart folks around here. Wait for one of the more knowledgeable people to chime in on that questions. It may be wise to go ahead and list what receiver and speakers that you are talking about, so they can give a better answer.

I have a set up of RT800I Front Speakers & a CS400I Center Channel Speaker & the Rears speakers are the RT600I.Im close to buying either one of these Subs either the PSW650 or The PSW505 both are rated basically the same that i saw which do you think would be the best option or can i not lose either way i decide?I will be using the set up for Home Theather & Music Both.I appreciate any opinions. Thanks Im also using a Sony STR-DE985 Receiver if that helps too.Take care
