well I let myself get talked into a small foray into 2 channel tubes. I bought a small tube pre to check out the old school stuff. I will be using a sunfire 2 X 300 amp with a pair of modded lsi9's. Ben is helping me out with the speaker XO mods. Once I get those back I'll render a very humble opinion. Thanks to George G. for some advice and support.

George helped by gently nudging you over the edge into the rabbit hole. Alice is waiting at the bottom but the journey down is long. Welcome to the wonderful world of cathodes, anodes, grids, and plates all packaged into a nice glass bottle. The sound can be addicting so quickly aquire a local support group or councelor that can eventually inititate the intervention when it is needed. Congratulations! I love my tubes:).

    What are all those pieces?

I bought these pieces as part of a complete system and admittedly don't know the pieces yet. I wanted the pre and the rest of the system is a wpp200c and power supply which is for a turntable. Additionallly there is a step up which someone is going to have to explain to me. Unfortunately the system did not come with a manual so I will need some help with set up to be sure. I am looking forward to it. My wife has quite a collection of albums from the 60's and 70's. I don't know what condition they are in but we'll see. I have some albums I bought and never opened. Cream Wheels of Fire, Disraeli Gears, All of Jimi Hendrix albums as well as some oddballs, Vanilla Fudge and such. I do need to get a turntable so suggestions are welcome.

The step up is placed between the phono cartridge and the preamp. If it is just a step up then it most likely has two transformers in it to boost the very low voltage output of a moving coil cartrige up to one that a normal preamp moving coil input could be able to use. Low output moving coil cartridges voltage can be 0.25 millivolts up to 0.9 millivolts while most moving magnet cartridges were designed to put out 3.0 to 5.0 millivolts. The box will "step up" the voltage to one the preamp can use it.

If you do not employ or purchase a low output moving coil cartridge you may not need the step up initially, though this gives you great flexability to try alot of cartridges in the future.

The Wright phono has enough gain for mm carts,, if he chooses a lo output mc,he will most assuredely need the step up.Nice snag.
JC approves....he told me so. (F-1 nut)
