Upgrading question.

So for my brithday I got myself the RM6000 speaker system, this is my first 5.1 speaker system, and me being the growing audiophile I am, I think this was good for the price but its lacking some serious punch. So the real question is this a good deal two used rt7's and a CS200 center for about $250 give or take? and will I notice a dramatic change? I plan on replacing everything in the RM6000 except for the sub probably.

Well, if you're lacking some serious punch, the sub should be the first thing replaced...5 sat's with a really nice sub could easily make you satisfied...
Yeah, it is a good deal, but I think you will notice a better improvement if you just upgrade the sub.
Welcom to the jungle...heh

First question I have is how long ago did you get the RM6000 system? It sounds like you just got it and you're already wanting to replace everything. I'm confused.
I agree with beginnersluck that if you're happy with the overall sound, with the exception being the lack of punch, the sub is definitely what you need to replace. You're not supposed to be getting your punch from your speakers, especially when they're small satellites like the ones that you have.
Out of curiousity, what kind of receiver are you running your system with?comment comment comment comment. bitchy. -
I got the system in December, and Im just not happy with the sound, and I think maybe I used the wrong word. Punch is not the word Im looking for. The bass for the most part is fine. I dont know how to describe it, when I listen to music it seems like it has no balls to it. I listen to alot of punk and rock. Im using Yamaha HTR-5230 receiver. I mean it sounds good, but not good enough. And movies sound better to me in 2 channel than 5.1 for some reason. I think my speaker placement may be to blame on that on though, my options are kinda limited, unless I wanted to rearrange my whole room.

If what you're looking for is an overall sound improvement, you'd better prepare to put out some coin to replace everything that you have.
Even though you like the sound of the sub, if you upgrade to tower speakers that have the ability to outperform your current sub, you'll end up replacing it too since it won't be able to keep up.
One thought about why your system sounds better for 2 channel vs. 5 is that your receiver may have a weird way of distributing the power, meaning you might be driving your mains at 100wpc, but the surrounds only at 35wpc. That's why I asked what receiver you were using for your system. Also, do you have the satellites hooked up to your sub or your receiver?comment comment comment comment. bitchy. -
the way the system works is my center and rear surrounds are hooked to my receiver, and my two front satellites and hooked to the sub which then goes in to my main speaker inputs. I'm thinking Im just gonna purchase the speakers I talked about in my first post, seems like it'll give me a quick fix on my limited budget. Oh yeah whoever asked what part of VA I live in, I live in Staunton, but will be moving back to VA Beach by the end of the month. thanks for everyones help.

A pair of RT7 for 250?????? If the guy is serious, that is a steal!(notice I didn't mention the CS200?). The RT7 was Polk's top of the line bookshelfs back when they were still around. I'd pick them up if I could find a pair.
That punch you're talking about must be the upper-bass punch right? The type that makes you start head banging. The RT7 should give you most of this but will benifit from a good subwoofer. They will give you a lot more punch than the mains in the RM series.
Pick up those RT7's before Russman(he loves his RT7) hears about this and gets a second pair LOL. That's a great price and you can build your system from there when you feel the need to upgrade.

First lets visit some potential pitfalls in your current setup. Because you are hooking up your mains through speaker level inputs...Your Yamaha settings should be as follows:
Front L/R : Large
Center: Small
Surrounds: Small
Sub : Off (None)
One option is to connect all of the sat's directly to the receiver and set them to small. Then hook the LFE out to the sub's line level input...and turn the settings in the Yamaha to On (Yes) for the subwoofer setting....
Start with either of these suggestions and you should notice a nice improvement. However, $250 for the speakers mentioned above is a good deal...
