Is the ED A2-300 enough for me?

Posted this on another forum and thought I would post it here as well to get some more opinions.

I am in the market for a new sub and am curious if I should spend more than the $350 for the A2-300. I can afford up to $700 for a sub but I dont know if I need to spend that much or not. If I can save some $ then i can get a blue ray player or may even an external amp as well. What can i expect if i step up to a higher dollar sub over the ED. Is it just volume and clarity? How much of a difference is there?

Here is my current setup:

fronts - Polk RTiA5's
center - Polk CSiA4
rears - Polk RTiA3's
sub -Polk PSW110

Here are the standard answers:

1.Budget – No more than $700 shipped + tax
2.Size requirements/limits – Smaller the better
3.Room dimensions – 13x22x8 - 2300 cubic feet
4.Primary uses – 60% TV 30% music 10% movies
5.Listening habits – Low to moderate volume daily, loud on occasion
6.Appearance requirements – None. Plain black box is fine.
7.Time frame - ASAP

The subs that I have looked into include models from ED, HSU, and SVS. How much of a difference is there between say the A2-300 and the SVS pc12-nsd? Is it worth double the cost? I have been researching for a few weeks now and can not decide if I want go with the lower end or the higher end of my budget. I know that $350 is where you move into the quality subs and I plan on keeping this sub for a long time. I do not listen at reference level and rarely listen at what others would consider loud. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Patrick

The A2-300 should do well in your room. I'm a little confused with your primary uses, but anyway, with music being a priority over movies you may be better served with one of the others, but I have not heard the HSU or SVS so I can not say for sure. One thing I will say is the eD is pretty large in size, but I think it is average for a 12" ported sub. Again looking at your primary uses, if you really would like smaller maybe consider a sealed design.

As to "Is it worth double the cost?" only you can answer that. IMHO the eD is a great performer at its price.

Good luck, hope others can add a little more help for you.

Is this a sealed room or does it open up to an adjoining room? If this is a seal room you maybe fine with the Ed. If it is not then you also have to add the space of the adjoining room. I would recommend getting the biggest/baddest sub you can afford bro. If your going to do it, then do it the best you can and be done. I would also suggest you look at the Epik Empire as it is on sale for a limited time and is within your budget. SVS makes a great sub also so definitely worth a look if the funds permit. It all depends on what your looking for, A3-300 or 200 seems nice though.

thanks for the opinions. It is not a sealed room. It is open via 3 doorways. I plan on moving in the coming months and will be momving to a place with an open floorplan where the living area and the kitchen will be connected as well.

i am starting to lean towards the HSU VTF2. Since i will not be playing it very loud and it is generally regarded as a more musical sub it may be the best choice for me. I keep hearing to go as big as I can so i wont regret it later. I am trying to talk my self out of blowing the whole budget on one item, in this case a sub, and get an amp as well.

    Decisions, decisions. thanks guys.
