So I took advantage of the New Egg deal that they are currently having on the monitor series. Im running a 7.1 receiver. I didnt buy the surrounds yet and wanted to get an opinion on if the monitor 40's will sound "good enough" or if I should splurge for a di/bi polar setup. What class di/bi polar should I get if you think its worth the money?

Thanks
Harold

Is it worth the money?....yes. If you have the money kicking around should you?....why not. Would I?.....no. Here's why...... depending on your room set up and how you set up the surrounds you might be hard pressed to notice a HUGE difference. You will notice some but maybe not enough to justify a few hundred more. I would pocket that cash savings and put it towards a better sub. I think too many people tend to sink WAY too much cash on surrounds thinking 'hey...it's called surround sound for a reason'. When in all actuality not a lot of information tends to get sent to the rears in movies. It is ambient sounds and that's about it. (yes, I know, a lot depends on the movie....I'm talking 'on average'.)

Plus...if you get the di-poles your rears will be more cash than your front stage. If you have the money, get the best possible front stage and sub you can afford.....that's where the impact REALLY is. In the meantime use cheep-o speakers for the rear until you get some extra cash. A few extra hundred could have brought you up to some nice RTI's or something along that line.

So since you already have the 70's...which are very nice, IF IT WERE ME, I would get the 40's and put the money saved into a nice sub or another pair of 40's to complete the 7.1. What do you have for a sub?

Thanks for your fast response. You make alot of sense. I will order the 40's here in the next few days. As for my sub, its an older Cerwin Vega 12" Im at work right now, so I cant tell you the part number. But it does the job for now. Ive been looking at the MicroPro, and dsw pro subs. Still undecided. Im sure the Pro series will do just fine for what I want.

Anyone know of any stands that are specifically made for the 40's? Or any stands that work well with them? Would like them to be black in color as well.

Not sure what you're running right now, but I just seen these on J&R Music. RTI12's for $399.00! Amazing speaker, fantastic price!

    http://www.jr.com/polk-audio/pe/POK_RTI12_hy_BK/

Buy the RTI12's and move whatever you have as front to the rear.

I've got a set now and they wail!

Don't know if there are any specifically made for them, but just look around for a set that looks good to you, has a decent size table as these are pretty big speakers and you will be fine. I love my 40's as surrounds and have had them for a little over a year now. Also, there is an awesome thread that was done by a fellow Polkie on wall mounting them with a step by step and pictures. Just another option.

That's the same as my new setup that I just ordered, with the exception of two 40's and two 30's as my surrounds. And I also have an Onkyo receiver (TX-NR807), along with two Energy E:xl-S12 subs. I'm assuming you really like the 70's and the CS2? I currently have a 5.1 setup with BIC DV736 mains, BIC DV62CLR center, and BIC DVI52si surrounds, which is a heck of a setup for the $$, but I'm hoping this Polk Monitor 7.1 setup is going to be a bit of an upgrade! :D

You guys will not be dissapointed by the 40's, they are a great surround speaker. I have even given my 70's a night off and hooked them up front just for the hell of it and was pretty impressed. For what they can be had for these days from the Egg, they are are a no brainer. Welcome to Club Polk guys.

I actually haven't got my things all set up yet cause just got everything over the past few days..all currently in the boxes and planning on getting everything hooked up this weekend! I have heard my uncles psw125 and I thought it sounded really good..I went with the PSW505 cause it was $70 cheaper! When I got my receiver (VSX 1019ah-k) the reviews were good about it...do you think I should look at the Onkyo 707 or 807 or do you think the Pioneer will be able to handle everything? Going from an older set up that was running sveral different speakers and can't wait to hear what these babies can do!!

Looking at the specs for that AVR, it looks like it will be just fine running your rig. About the only thing you would gain from the 707/807 would be pre outs for adding an external amp. I am an Onkyo man myself and run an 806, and have been nothing but pleased with it's performance. Pre outs are a nice option to have, but in no way are required, I would say it is a toss up.

I have never heard a 505, but I am very tempted to sell my 125 and get one based on the good press/cheap price these days. I have a feeling you wouldn't be dissapointed by it's performance. My 125 rocks and the 505 is, on paper, quite superior to it.

I got everything all moved in and set up...took a while to get all the banana plugs/wires stripped but well worth them hooking everything up. (Went with 12 gauge wire and monoprice banana plugs) Once I got everything hooked up I was blown away with the new set up...the CS2 speaker is amazing and lets you hear every spoken word even when things are being blown up and other loud sounds are being pushed out. In the place I am in right now, I only have the sub turned to 1/4 of the power that it can be turned up to for fear the windows and walls might collapse..haha..we turned it up to 1/2 and it sounded awesome but thought the neighbors might not want to be shaken so we turned it back down. Before the new speakers I would turn my AVR to around -8.5- -7 to get the loud volumes...Highest I have turned it to with the new setup is around -10 but get great sound at -14 and lower..I like it to be loud and these are great for what I like. Both my roommates were blown away and said they would rather watch movies here now than going to any movie theater that we have around! Im getting ready to post pics of the setup in a day or 2..

Congrats on the new setup...some good choices...

Of course I am biased since I run an Onkyo 805 M70s/CS2/M30s in a 5.1 config. With a sub that digs just a tad lower than the PSW505 but is similar. It's a nice low mid-system that is pretty much the best bang for your buck that you'll be able to run for Home Theater for a long time before you tire of it.

Man Ive had these things for over a week now, and only three of them are hooked up. I got all my wire and banana plugs last night, but couldnt get the time to hook everything else up! Hopefully that will change tonight! :) All that I can say is, im very impressed with the way the CS2 and Monitor 70's sound by themselves. Very Crisp highs, and hammering mids. Cant wait to hook up the PSW505 and Monitor 40's. It should tie everything together.

    Your gonna love it!

    Josh,
Got everything hooked up. Your right they do sound good and I do love them. Well worth the money. The only constructive criticism I would give you is on the shelf that your CS2 is on....move the black box down on top of silver and center that speaker on the stand. Other than that, it looks like you have yourself a nice system.

just moved into my new place yesterday, and was finally able to hook up my M70s, CS2 and 505 but wasn't able to play around with my AVR settings. the 3.1 setup sounded okay so far, but hopefully the speakers will wake up once my AVR settings are where I want them to be.

the low end of the 505 rumbles alot more than my old BIC 12". i may mess around and run both in the near future.
