Hi everyone,
I just picked up a pair of nice Monitor 10A's off CL for $100 (they look sweet - and sounded great when I auditioned them at the sellers place ). Being that I'm pretty new at the vintage audio thing, I was wondering what kind of amp do you recommend for this pair? Currently I have a Marantz 1060, but I feel it'd be too weak for these babies...
thanks fellas

I have my 10's hooked up to a '79 Onkyo A-7070 (170 watt), and they sound AMAZING!

Kool, nice grab. You have the Peerless tweeters, right?
I have my Mon 10b's on either my B&K AVR-307 150wpc@8ohm(~185wpc @ 6ohm) or my B&K ST-1400 II, that is 125wpc @8ohm (~155wpc@6ohm) and it sounds great.
I just added a Grant Fidelity B-283 Tube Buffer, and that totally transformed my listening. (And I am just getting started tube rolling ) -
thanks for the suggestions guys... i'm getting a better idea of what these'll work with. btw. that Grant Fidelity B-283 tube buffer looks sweet!
also I'm not sure if it has the Peerless tweeters, I don't think so tho... they have a silver face and the one's I've seen were black. Any idea what these are? -
SL1000 are the silver metal finish and have the polkaudio logo written on the bottom. Nice speakers and welcome to CP!

I have my 10B's hooked up to an old school Onkyo A-10 and they rock!
I also have a A-5 in the garage that I got for $40. Either the A-5, A-7, or A-10 are great choices for how much they sell for. They can really wake up your speakers if you don't mind not having a remote. -
I replaced a pair of $2000. speakers with the 10b's a year back. Only weakeness is imaging. The 10b's cleaned up after I replaced the capacitors in the crossover system and that's something I strongly recommend. I run the speakers thru a Audioresearch 9 preamp powered by a Marantz 8B tube amp. Sound is incredible.

Used/vintage Carver or Adcom amps are fairly inexpensive and there seems to always be a good supply of them. TFM-25 or 35 are two Carvers that'd work well. I can't speak about the Adcoms, never owned one.:)

here is a pic of the SL1000's.
BTW: I was considering updating my SL1000's out, but since I got the GF tube buffer, I don't think I want to/ need to. They sound sweet. The buffer takes out the harshness, without loosing the crispness -
wow, thanks for all the suggestions... now time to start scouring garage sales and CL.. heheh
kcoc321 - yup, those are the tweeters I got. I'll see how they sound once I find a proper amp, and if they're too harsh - I might look into one of those tube buffers. is harshness a known problem with these tweeters? -
I am running my Monitors (2 pair) with Adcom monoblocks. Talk about making them sing....!!! I tried one of them Yamaha rx-v665 avr things with 90 wpc...cough cough, but it really couldn't push them they way they need.

The SL1000's are said to be harsh by some. I know with my Monitor 7b's, also with SL1000's, I did find them harsh sometimes. The Monitor 10b's with the SL1000's were not as harsh, but they are now really sweet after I added the GF Tube buffer.
To me, it was an excuse to try out tubes, for about the same $$$ as upgrading the tweeters. I had already done the Mortite seals to the MW's. My next 'upgrade step' on the 10b's will be the Crossovers, as well as trying out more tubes, of course. I don't think I will be changing out the tweeters, unless I come across a sweet deal on some Peerless.
