Either a velodyne SMS-1 or a BFD 1124

I'm not sure which I want, so if I can find a reasonably priced used SMS-1 I'll go with that or if I can find a BFD 1124 I will get that. It seems like the BFD 1124 is hard to come by, but really that's is my main choice unless a decent SMS-1 is to be had from someone.

If anyone has either one for sale I would be interested in it.

Below are two links to the SMS-1. On the other thread, I had mentioned 3 bills for them......I forgot that they were on sale from Velodyne. Apparently they are no longer for sale so I was off by 50 or 60 bucks. Here's a couple of the the best prices I could find doing a quick search. They pop up on the forum every once in a while too.

You might want to try what thsmith found you first to get your feet wet.

I've been toying with the idea of selling my SMS-1. If I were to sell it, I'd look for around $300 + shipping. I bought it probably about a year and a half ago, but I'd obviously let you know for sure before any sale. It's in great condition. If you're interested let me know and I'll be deciding whether or not I want to sell it.

    Thanks,

    Paul

I would love to get that, but the only posts he has put on the forums are to sell that. I'll try and contact him and see what happens.

Yes on the BFD, Guitar Center sells them too.

That soundcard will not work. This is the one I use
    http://www.turtlebeach.com/products/audio-advantage-srm/home.aspx

Here is what is covered in REW FAQ on SCs.
"A soundcard (internal or external) which supports full duplex operation (simultaneous replay and recording) with line inputs and outputs. Note that microphone inputs are NOT suitable and should not be used (they have too much gain and most suffer from high noise levels and limited bandwidth). Inexpensive soundcards are typically adequate, a reference measurement or a loopback connection can be used to remove the soundcard's frequency response from the measurement. Examples of USB soundcards which have been found to work well are the Soundblaster MP3+, Soundblaster Live! 24-bit USB External (but not under Windows Vista) and the M-Audio MobilePre-USB. Higher quality units that work well are the EMU 0404 and the Tascam 144."

If you decide to go with REW I will send you my SPL meter, SC and cables as long as you pay shipping and return them. But in the end you will want these pieces for your won.

The SC allows you to interface the computer, SPL meter and AVR/Receiver.

REW send the freq sweeps to SC out to AVR and uses SPL meter to take measurements.
Once the sweep is complete it them provides a graph. LIke below.

The BFD goes between AVR and SUB. Then based upon what you see in REW you setup filters on the BFD to lower the peaks.

Thanks for all your help so far. I have an RS SPL meter, I assume that will work, but then again I haven't been right about any of this yet., and I'll probably just order the SC you suggested. I really appreciate you offering though. It still blows my mind how helpful most are here at the polk forums.

I asked SVS and they didn't even comment on the SMS-1( because they have a comparable produvt but for 700$) they suggested the BFD and REW, but they know that their product was more then I'm wanting to spend.

How hard is it to use the BFD setup? Is this something that is going to take me countless hours to figure out and use, or will I be able to get the hang of it in a couple of hours or so?

Yes RS SPL meter is commonly used but can be accurately used for LFE freqs. If you want to measure full range you will need a Beringer mic or better.

BFD can be programmed 2 ways, one is to use the front panal and the other is by downloading from PC using a Midi interface to send filter settings to the BFD .

If you read this 3 or 4 times it will come crystal clear how to use REW for measurements and BFD to setup filters. The people at the SHack are very knowledgable and helpful.
