Smoked for 13 years and been smoke free for 12 years now. Cold turkey and never went back.

What worked for me was I kept telling myself that I wasn't really quitting but just taking a break from cigarettes for a while.

You know, kinda like the ex girl friend that isn't breaking up with you but taking a break...

It did make things a lot better. Go for walks and drink lots of water, brush your teeth a lot. trust me if you can go a week without you are set.

BTW it'll change your life, 2 years after quitting I started racing MTB's and competing all over western Canada. Never looked back once.

Stick it out, you'll even wake up in the morning without having to look for cigs.:D

Got home from the hospital about 8 hours ago. Apparently everything went as well as it could have. The intense pain in the arm disappeared immediately, much of the strength and reflexes came back as well, so no permanent nerve damage. Be a little longer before we know about the neck, but the doc is pretty confident, as long as it fuses.

I've already cut the pain meds in half since before the surgery. But I do have a real hard time getting comfortable. Side effects of the surgery? Drinking water feels like swallowing glass, and I never imagined that removing a piece of hip bone would hurt quite this much.

That's about all I can type for now, need to walk around to keep the hip from getting too pain full.

    Glad it went well also.

Take it as easy as you can. I heard the hip thing is painful too but didn't want to tell you before hand. You didn't need that worry also. Good luck with your recovery.;)

Glad it went well for you. Had the same procedure done in '02 with triple level fusion and plating. Make sure to stay away from the nicotine for at least a year till the fusion is complete. Walk, walk, walk for the pain in the hip. It's about as close to a gunshot as you'll get. When you start PT, work like a madman, it's worth it. 8 years later, I'm still doing fine.
Wish I could say the same about the 6 fusions, rodding and 2 prosthetic discs in my lower back.

Very Glad things went well for you William.

I have been known to toss the pill bottle in favor of a large decanter of JD (regular refills of coarse) to ease the pain.... just a thought!

I just wish I could get even slightly comfortable. Can't even walk too much, 7" of fresh snow last night. How long did the pain in the throat and hip last for you?

Hi William, don't suffer if you have those meds near by. That's what they're there for, to get you through this tough time.;)

I don't remember almost 2 months after my heal surgery and quite frankly, I'm glad!!!

I hope your cold turkey from smoking is happening too. Have you found that great thread on that?

    Hope you get better quick.

    Hey William, you doin OK?

    Doing fine thanks.

Seemed like Saturday things started to improve rapidly, probably because I finally figured out how to get some sleep while wearing this damn cervical collar. It's the hard type that immobilize your neck, not the foam one. Been walking a mile a day or so without any issues, pain in the hip is much better, back eating solid food, haven't really even had the urge to smoke yet. Not bad for 1 week after surgery. In fact I need to call the doctor and find out why I need this collar, as I don't appear to have any neck pain when carefully moving my neck, others I have talked to claim it's unbearable after this surgery?

    William,

My wife just went through this surgery about 2 months ago. Having a sore throat is putting it mildly. She is still having issues with her throat. So expect some pain there. As for the fusion she is doing much better, numbness is almost completely gone. There was some initial damage from her injury so they say she may always have some numbness in her finger tips.

    Wonderful William.
Your already past the 3 day milestone which is the hardest point for most quiting attempts.;) Your lungs are well on their way to cleaning themslves out at 7 days.
Glad your getting some sleep. That will help the recovery go faster.

I hope you get to take that thing off today!
