British products never cease to amaze me...

Today I went in to a local hifi/HT shop just to browse around and audition things. I had heard the B&W 684's before and wanted to get a pair when finances allowed (not sure I want to anymore since i like the LSi7's so much ;) )and wanted to hear what else they had to offer. I found some Polk LSi15's and man, they sound good. BUT..in a room by itself was a system that blew my mind. A Marants preamp, SACD player and a pair of 300 watt monoblocks powered a pair of B&W 802D's....wow. Everything I listened to on those speakers blew my mind...Clarity, depth, soundstage and imaging, low end response, openness..there wasn't anything this speakers did wrong. The definition of (as close as you can get to) a live band in your room. Impressive. And for $7k each, they should be lol. I've heard my fair share of British hifi equipment, and I seem to have a weakness for it. I don't know exactly what it is, but the Brit's really know their sound. My girlfriend's Dad prefers German equipment, but I say British. B&W really knows speakers, and later on I'd love to have a McIntosh/ B&W system in a dedicated room. Anyone who has never heard these speakers should definitely give them a listen. SOON.

Man, I envy you. I've been into this gig for nearly 10 years, and I've still heard nothing that has even come close to 'blowing my mind'.

That said, the B&W 802's aren't too shabby. Glad that you got to enjoy the experience. Now it's time to start saving up.. :D

Maybe I'm easily, amused, I don't know lol. Either way, it will be decades before I can even start thinking of anything of that proportion, especially with grad school costs...fun stuff. I really like my LSi7's and will upgrade my amp before looking for different speakers. $14k is a lot of money though...I've heard speakers that have come close to their sound quality at half the price. I don't know if I could justify spending so much on speakers.

    Zitro,

The cool thing is that you're young *from what I can tell?*. You've got plenty o' time to buy loudspeakers that cost as much as a brand new car. The bad news is that you may to wait a little while to get them. The good news is that this stuff isn't going away, so when you're ready - they'll be there. :)

You got it sir; I'm only 20 lol. I know I have plenty of time, it's just hard to be patient sometimes when there is so much out there, so much to learn and try out; it's all very exciting. But, in due time I will be where I want to be. Until then, hard work and enjoying the music is my plan :) Hopefully, these "experts" are wrong and the hifi industry isn't collapsing. I'd hate to finally reach a point of having enough disposable income to piece together my dream system just to find the hifi niche is depleted.

Btw, why do you say a speaker has never "blown your mind"? What do you enjoy now as your setup? I love hearing/seeing other people's systems.
