I have a pair of IMF CM III's on local DC Craigslist. They are in excellent condition. I always like face to face to make sure buyer is happy.

I got this email after I replied they were still available:

David
I have been able to contact a small shipipng agency that will be able to pick up and be respnsible for the monitors. They told me that they could pick them up later this week.I can either fedex a money order for $325 on Tuesday morning(Banks closed monday).Would this be adequate?
Thanks Adam DiCarlo

...I replied "MAYBE Paypal???"

I know scams...but if i go with PAYpal instead....Can I get screwed. Have Had a lot of offers to ship..from Fleabay..but don't want to be responsible. Is Paypal bullet proof if they have their own shipper.....won't take a money order.

If you feel like it might be a scam, chances are you are correct. I would walk away and be safe.

Since he found a reliable shipping company, tell him to fedex the check to the shipping company and you will hand over the speakers when the shipping co comes to your door with cash.

...By the way...The IMF CM III's are British monitor speakers....built like a tank...Transmission line speakers with a lot of internal bracing. But they did not have grilles....well they did , but a chunk of foam Velcroed to front....no frame....would not know how to pack. They are in fantastic condition and don'y know how they would pack them. Drivers are worth the price. If they are destroyed...well!!!

He is offering to arrange shipping and send you a MO fedex.

Assuming he will wait for MO to clear to have shippers come and pick up speakers I do not see the issue unless I am reading something wrong.

He could PP you the money and still have shipper pick them up once you have veriified the money is in your account.

I must be reading this wrong.

No they are not since this item is transacted outside Ebay. Go to Paypal and read the user agreements. It's a PITA, but you'll better understand what's covered and what's not.

Frankly, I'd use Ebay and it's protection vs. Paypal and Craigslist if you are so concerned about getting scammed.

    Good luck

...Thank you guys for input. I am always aware of scammers. Just got a Paypal account....us olesters don't like change. I like face to face. I realize, however, specialized items aren't always available locally. Would like someone who appreciates these speakers to get them. Whatever happened to TRUST.

craigslist is local. Anything else is 99% SCAM. Even local dealings can be risky.

...probably will not go through with it. But, the main question is>>>>Can paypal payments be retracted or scammed??? New to this. Don't have a cell phone, ipod or WEEEEEEE! Over 60 and would "LIKE" to trust people and new processes.

Again thank you for input. Got to learn about all this new fangeled STUFF.

It's not so much about not getting your money it's about the buyer stating something is damaged/unreceived/not as described/a thousand other excuses...to file a claim against you the seller. The buyer has most of the power. Even you as the seller would have to file/settle a lost/damaged shipping claim as the shipping co. won't even talk to the buyer.

His method of having the shipping co. pick up the item seems very fishy to me. A normal transaction would have the seller arranging the shipping and relaying the info/cost to the buyer for approval.

It just seems a bit fishy to me, based on the info you've provided.

So are the scammers. Cash only at pickup with 'Shipper' verifying in writing as to condition of speakers at pickup. I still smell scam.

    Good suggestions, I would add:
Have the buyer's shipping company be responsible for the packaging and the liability. Write up a "damage waiver" stating that buyer and his agent is responsible for the packaging and transportation of said items. Have buyer sign it and Fax it back to you. Have shipping Agent sign it when you bring in the speakers. Do not give them the speakers without cash in your hand.
FYI: Some MO's and cashier checks can actually be reversed. I did not have it happen, but last year, I took in a Cashier's check from a Bank, and while they made me wait to cash it, I asked the cashier "why is was taking so long?" and the attendant told me that the funds could actually be 'denied' up to 90 days, even with a bank MO!!
    Cash is King :D

Taking cashiers check could wind up like that guy in California who took one from CL to the bank to cash. He was arrested for presenting a fake check and it cost him 14K in legal fees to get out off it.

    From the Clark Howard site:

How the BOA blunder went downBy now, you’ve probably heard the story of the San Francisco man who was arrested and jailed when he tried to verify the validity of a check at Bank of America branch. Clark found out about this story recently and today talked with the man, Matthew Shinnick, who spent about $14,000 in legal fees to clear his name. It all started when Shinnick posted two bicycles for sale on Cragislist and received a check from a man for more than the cost of the bicycles. He went into a BOA branch to see if the check was legitimate and verify that there was money in the person’s account. The check was drawn on a BOA account. The teller told him it was a valid account, so he cashed the check. At that point, BOA employees called police and Shinnick was arrested on fraud charges because the check was actually fraudulent. Matthew had no idea that the real criminal had used the name of a legitimate company to fake a check. So, Matthew sat in the bank branch for hours while police figured out what to do with him. Then, they took him to jail where he spent the night. Once he got out and a judge let him go, he had to clear his name legally so the arrest would not come back to haunt him. He had to hire attorneys to do this and it cost him nearly $14,000. He then went to Bank of America and asked that the bank cover his fees because it was the bank’s error. But BOA turned him down. This kind of treatment sends the message that banks only care about their bottom line, not about their customers. It's unacceptable and Clark thinks it's time to fight back.

I wouldn't do it, nor would I give him my pp acct. Cash & carry or no deal. Why take chances?

pp account is just your email, what's the big deal? As long as you don't have a 123 password, it's gold. Also, money order clears, good to go.
I paypalled a lady in Georgia for a laptop she had on CL. But it was only 50 bucks and I was the only one apparently interested.

Scam, total scam. You would get a fake money order and it would be 1-2 weeks before you figured out you'd been taken. PayPal might be OK if you insisted he send the money as a personal gift. That way, he could not file any sort of claim. Chances are, they won't bother to reply to your PayPal idea since they operate on the fake MO scam.

Based on the amount of stuff you re-sell on Craigslist and eBay....why is this a shock to you?
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.
