I wouldn't mind having one but honestly, unless I'm driving on the dunes at the shore to go fishing, there's no real good used for it here. Off-roading in NJ isn't exactly a high speed affair. Too many trees and the sugar sand can sneak up on you and swallow your truck pretty quick.

I hear they can't keep them on the lots down in the Southwest though.

I would LOVE to see another Lightning from SVT.

I loved them when I first saw them online last year, but I saw one on the street the week before last and it didn't seem as impressive for some reason. Of course I live in a town where everyone has some sort of modified truck, that might be it.

That's the thing about the Raptor. The only "messing up" you would do to it is scratch paint. You aren't going to easily break it. For 90% of the people out there, the Raptor will far exceed your limitations. You'll run out of courage before it runs out of capability.

    That's a Hennessey "VelociRaptor 500".

Read all about it here: http://jalopnik.com/5468801/hennessey-velociraptor-500-first-drive

    It's 5.4L V8 is supercharged with a Whipple supercharger.

But I'd still wait for the 6.2L. I hear rumblings about a 700 horsepower beast with a Whipple supercharged based 6.2L coming out of another tuner. I want to say Roush but I can't remember for sure.

I bought one of these trucks and a 2010 GT500 back in February.

Been to Anza Borrego desert (where the truck was tested by Ford) half a dozen times running it out and did the 138 mile Mojave Road two months ago.

It's an awesome truck.....even better if you can use it for the things it was designed for.

    ?????

    Huh?

Have you seen the power levels of say, a turbodiesel SuperDuty? Or a Duramax equipped GMC? Do you really think that the 180 horsepower 302 from 1882 F-150 will handle towing a 15,000 pound trailer with any kind of urgency?

The only reason the Raptor is so fast is because it weighs so little. It's actually not that fast. Then again, it's purpose is to be an off-road racer. Kind of like a club race car for an amateur or semi-pro level of SCORE or CORR.

Hell, my truck is rated at 380 horses and 450 pound feet of torque. That's LESS power than what you can get in a F-350 with a Powerstroke from 2001. The biggest difference between the two is about 1500 pounds of weight and 6 less feet in length. A 2001 F-350 with a Powerstroke diesel can run through a 1/4 mile in the low 16 second range. Not blistering by far. Take 1500-2000 pounds off of it and times will drop to the low 14 second range. Give it better gearing and less drivetrain mass and you are in the 13 second range and you still have the same amount of power that you would have used to tow that 12,000+ pound motor home. Or that 15,000 pounds of horse trailer. Or that 10,000 pounds of boat.

It's no different than cramming a 454 cubic inch V8 from a mid-sized Chevelle under the hood of a diminutive Corvette. Or even taking the 396 from an Impala and stuffing it under the hood of a Chevelle Malibu. Or even the 390 from a Ford F-100 and shoving it under the hood of a Mustang.

What's the point of putting that kind of power in anything? Because sometimes you need it.

Trucks are sometimes required to work a LOT harder than a passenger car. I regularly pull a 22' car trailer that sometimes has about 8000 pounds on it. Our company pickup truck is a 2002 GMC Sierra 3500 dually. It's got a Duramax turbo diesel in it that has an obscene amount of power...and we need every bit of it sometimes. I believe it's torque rating is somewhere in the neighborhood of 850 lb/ft or so, and roughly 450-500 hp, with the aftermarket parts we've put on it. It's got a computer chip with several different settings...I believe it's most powerful setting will give you somewhere around 1000 lb/ft of torque.

It takes a lot of power to pull gigantic loads.

Nobody needs 700hp in a truck. Yeah, like in the article..."because it encourages you to take every on-ramp you see and scare the solids out of everyone in sight." It's a truck, you'd be wheels up before you could "scare the solids out of everyone". IMO, a truck with 700hp is just plain stupid (at least for the average joe on the street).

And of course all that article talks about is speed. Nothing about towing big loads.

No, the performance biased suspension encourages you to take every on-ramp you see.

BTW, this truck has 700 horsepower and needs every bit of it:

You don't have a job that involves driving any kind of big vehicle do you? If not, you really have no basis for believing that.

There are plenty of people that need trucks with 700hp.

Maybe this particular instance is slightly different, but there are MANY people that need trucks with that kind of power.

I own a 22,000 lb bucket truck. It's a 1978 GMC C60, with a 366 big block that's putting out roughly 450 horsepower. It's slower than dirt. Seriously...it tops out at about 50-55. 60-65 with a tail wind going downhill.

I would absolutely LOVE to have a couple hundred more horsepower. It's not necessarily about speed. It's about power being proportional to the size of the truck. Sometimes, it takes that kind of power just to get a big truck moving, and keep it moving. Trucks are required to work MUCH harder than your average passenger car. Are you saying that because it's a truck, it doesn't need that kind of power? Does a car need that kind of power? Does a boat? No...but plenty of them have vastly more power than that. A truck actually needs that power much more than any car or boat does.

Does the average person need a truck with 700hp? Absolutely not, but don't kid yourself into thinking that nobody needs a truck with that much power. Some people haul very heavy loads on a daily basis, and having that much extra power on tap(headroom, as with our crazy audio hobby), is a great thing. If you aren't using your engines absolute full capabilities, you are putting a lot less wear and tear on the drive train. Sound familiar? That same concept applies to our audio hobby. Ya know how you're more likely to blow a speaker because of too little power, versus too much power? The same is true of trucks. Having that extra power on tap, means that the truck is working much less, spinning fewer RPM's, and increasing it's life span. If you're stretching the engine to it's absolute limits every time you're pulling something, you're drastically reducing it's life span.

Does anybody need a car with 700hp? Not at all. Even less so than anyone would need a truck with 700hp. You don't see too many people pulling trailers with their supercars. Does this mean that they shouldn't be allowed?

Does anybody need a stereo that costs tens of thousands of dollars, with a 150" projection screen and a 9.4 surround sound system? Absolutely not. Does this mean that they should be outlawed.

This Raptor is like a supercar, just in a different vein. Just as some people enjoy high speed track driving, other people enjoy off roading...to the absolute extreme. This is what this vehicle is tailored for. As with every other "ultimate off-roader" though, I'm sure 75% of the Raptor's that get sold will never even leave the pavement. The same was true of Hummers. The original Hummer was billed as the "ultimate off-roading" vehicle...yet the vast majority of them ended up getting 24" wheels, a weekly bath/wax job, climate controlled storage...and never even saw so much as a gravel road.

The good news is that Hummers are no longer being produced. Now you've gotta go door to door to let people know how much of an **** you are.;):p
