The 8500 will have better black level performance than the 3000U. Also keep in mind the 3kU has been replaced by the new 4000U at a price of 1999.00 Both projectors will perform very well given the slight edge to the Epson. As of late Epson has been having some issues with the 8500UB concerning a red wave in the image. Not sure if this has been fixed as of late, but it has been reportedly happening at low hours of usage.
For features and a good image I would say Panasonic, the image is bright, nice depth to it and the black level is pretty good. These projectors are very close in performance giving the Epson the ever so slight edge in black level. At this time and not knowing what the fix is for the Epson I would vote trying out the Panasonic and going from there. Allot of places like Visual Apex and Projectorpeople will allow you to demo the PJ for like 4hrs etc and return.Shoot the jumper.....................BALLIN.............!!!!!

I'll never go back to Panny, had one once, pixels die, very limited warranty...no thanks. I now own a Epson 1080UB, love it. Amazing PQ and a 3 year bumper-to-bumper warranty.If...
Ron dislikes a film = go out and buy it.
Ron loves a film = don't even rent. -

The same can be said about Epson by some end users as well. Not every model is perfect but I think he will be happy with either choice.
If I were to pick one for my own HT I would try Panny for it's features. As I mentioned PQ wise the edge goes to the 8500UB.Shoot the jumper.....................BALLIN.............!!!!!

Warranty is big for me and Epson is much better then Panny's. And yes, you are right, all models have issues, but my experience with Panny will keep me away.If...
