Hey all, I was just wondering if there are any cool ways to create some ambient light around my TV. i have seen some behind tv lighting systems, but i was just wondering what others have done.

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum.

I use a Cinema Quest "Ideal Lume" 6500 kelvin lamp. Makes quite a difference, especially at night.

A blacklight on either side has always done the trick for me.

I've also got a blacklight mounted behind each of my speakers. Makes for some great ambiance, when mixed with my numerous posters.

I had an Idealume behind my old RPTV, but it didn't work well with my projector screen when I stepped up. I snagged a couple of little LED accent lights from Home Depot and stuck them to the back of my armoires with double-sided tape so that they light up the walls to the sides of the screen. Works quite well, and was cheap.

Honestly? I just put a rope light behind there. Does the trick. It may have a low-ish WAF, though.

LED's are too blue in color to be accurate bias lighting. Ideally, you want 6500k color temp bulbs, and a neutral background behind the TV.

    Ghetto ambilight:
Buy a cheap LCD 5-7" panel off ebay and feed it the same signal as the TV is getting. Put some kind of diffuser over it, so you don't get distracting motion going on (ie wax paper, smoked glass, etc). Prop it behind the TV facing the wall. Changes color in sync w/ the TV. Did this at my old place w/ a 50" LCD projection & it worked pretty well.

The main problem with the ghetto-ambi was that it transitioned as fast as the signal transitioned, so a sudden change to a dark screen and it'd be gone. Ambilight is more averaged and smoothly transitions from one scene to the next.

I'm sure that one could find a video processor for cheap that'd give you the same end result (only has to be NTSC and doesn't matter if it totally fuzzes up the signal), but I never got around to sorting that out.

The Cinemaquest Ideal Lume is only $59 bucks, and comes with a spare lamp.
