I will have to put my purchase of a new AV Receiver on hold.....I cam home from work, turned on my Samsung 50" DLP and saw red. Any suggestions on a 50 or 52" TV? I am thinking LCD at this point.

Out of curiosity, what exactly do you mean that you saw red? Is it a lamp issue? If so, you could replace it for much cheaper than the cost of a new TV (around $100 for the part and 10 minutes of labor). It was a snap to replace the lamp on my mitsubishi DLP.

Agreed; DLP technology was great at the time, but long term the lamps have issues. I would bet that it is simply a lamp issue, in which case it is as easy as changing a headlight in your car. Look around for a lamp - for $100 bucks or a little more it might be worth it to try rather than buying a whole new tv.

I had the red color chip replaced last July, the cost was 230.00 for the labor/anaged to get Samsung to pay for the part. The tech did leave me the green and blue chips (85.00 each, so maybe I eill call him up to see if he can fix it.

Ok, so it sounds like a color wheel issue. It's a bit more difficult to replace, but isn't that tough. Then again, I think a new color wheel is in the $250 range (not positive). Once you start spending that kind of money, you might as well think about a new television. But, it's up to you.

I've got a 1080P 50" Samsung plasma that has awesome picture been zero trouble and can probably be found in the States for less than $900. Just before I got this one I had the 50" Panasonic but took it back because of too much grain and very high judder (like motion blur but caused by video processor). Totally pleased with Sammy.

Personally I would go with Plasma. According to the "numbers" plasmas are capable of better contrast ratios, deeper blacks, and pretty much better all around picture. Better viewing angles, less power consumption (I think) more affordable large screen units, and generally cost less. There was/still is a problem with burn in, but there is improvements being made in that area with the newer sets and anti burn in thingy majigys. Plasmas can sometimes be a hassle to set up in bright rooms, and have problems with glare, but IMHO Plasma is the way to go. If/when I ever upgrade my TV it will be to a plasma.

Plasma is the better TV. LCD's will look good in stores because stores have the perfect set-up for LCD's not so much Plasma's.

Plasma's will shine once you get them set up in your home. So much more pop then LCD at night. Blacker blacks, better viewing angles etc..

If you have a very bright room and mostly watch tv during the day then LCD would be the way to go due to glare on a plasma which is not horrible but lcd is a little better.

LED = overpriced LCD tv's. They have a nice Picture but plasma will give you same if not a better picture at a fraction of the cost IMHO. Plus if you move just one cushion left or right with LED/LCD Tv's your picture will lose color.

If you watch mostly at night then Plasma is the way to go.

$1200 will get you a very nice Plasma

But it comes down to your eyes. Go to a few stores and mess around with them.

Remember LCD's in stores are set to Vivid and the lighting make them look very bright.

Plasma's will be turned down to make very dim.

Burn-in is a thing of the past. You might see IR for the first 200 hrs but that will go away.

I used to have a 52" Mitsu DLP, until I just recently purchased a 40" Sammy LCD. It does obviously have a smaller display but I'm way happier with the sammy. I was under the impression that plasmas do cost more to run then plasma, but I could be wrong.

Plasma's may look nice, but wait till it craps out in 2 years and the repair bill is almost as much as a new set.

All electronics have a lifespan Face, and from what I have read (and a few friends that have Plasma sets) there have been some advances in the Plasma TV's to increase their life expectancy. While I don't disagree that a replacement/fix would probably be about as much as a new set, lets face it they just don't make em like they used to.

You have ZERO clue what you are talking about. Tell me why I have had my 42" Panny Plasma for over 7 years now and still puts out a beautiful PQ if they crap out in 2 years

Please do not spread FUD when you have no idea what you are talking about.

Today's Plasma will average around 22 - 30 years. They have a rated life of 100,000 until 1/2 life.

They will last just as long or longer then an lcd.

I am curious as to what you think would make the plasma crap out and cost as much as a new set???

LMAO... Like I stated please tell me what about a plasma will cause it to die and make it the cost of a new set?? I will wait until you run over to your neighbor's TV repair shop and get the answer

And you stated that PLASMA'S look nice but wait until it craps out in 2 years. Could it happen sure just like it could for DLP and LCD.

Failure rate is something like less then 3% for TV's including Plasma's

Believe what you like but please do not come in here spreading FUD about plasma's.

I have installed many many many Plasma's over a 3 - 4 years span and NOT ONE has died or needed repair.

Agree, Best Buy also had the Tc-p50X1 which is only 720P but has amazing blacks and an amazing picture for $699 which a steal for this TV. This TV will compare to many LCD's twice it's price.

OP has a lot of options. He can wait until the new TV's come out or head to a store a tweak the LCD's and Plasma's they have.

It's the OP's eyes and what he likes.

    Good luck either way.
