Rock and Roll Reminiscing

04 May 2003 --- Letter Of The Week is “Q”

For what this is about and some guidelines please click on the following link:

http://clubpolk.polkaudio.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7234

Yes, it’s a long post, but please read, if you participate.

This week we are only discussing artists whose last name, and groups whose name begin with the letter “Q”.

Note: The word “The” doesn’t count, so for example “The Allman Brothers Band” belongs in the "A's" discussion and not in the “T’s” (guideline #5).

When possible, please supply complete title, format, company, year and catalog number when posting recordings.

And so our 26-week odyssey continues…

Hope you come along for the ride… ;)

OK thought I’d grab one of the two in my collection…

    Quicksilver Messenger Service
    The Best of… – CD (1990 Capitol – CDL-57263)
A college roomie loved these guys and a little bit rubbed of on me. He had their self-titled debut and Happy Trails, a live 2nd release by the group. QMS was part of the mid/late 60’s, San Fran acid rock scene. Their sound generally had more of a folk rock twist, very much to my mind in the Grateful Dead vein. However, their best-known stuff is in many ways more reminiscent of early Traffic.

It would have been a great RnR Trivia question to just ask, “Name a QMS band member.” Other than Nicky Hopkins, who came in with his piano between their 2nd and third albums, there is not a “famous” name to be found. This is not to say they were not good musicians, they were. In particular, John Cipollina was a very well respected Bay Area guitarist. And when band founder Dino Valenti (not to be confused with Gino Vanelli) finally stepped up to the mic, he proved to have a very likable and distinctive voice.

What differentiated QMS from many of their contemporaries is that they appeared to write very little of their material. While they did some covers and claimed some songs as their own, Valenti wrote their best stuff under a number of pseudonyms. As “Jesse Farrow”, Valenti wrote their two biggest hits, “Fresh Air” and “What (cha gonna do) About Me”. “Fresh Air” was actually co-written by “Jesse Oris Farrow”. WTH???? Either song would be readily recognized, and probably liked, by anyone over the age of 40 (or so). Other notable tracks on this CD include a nice, but too short, cover of Bo Diddley’s “Who Do You Love”, and “Pride of Man”, again not written by a member.

I can’t recommend this CD. It’s just not strong enough, and the CD transfer is not state of the art. However, there are a few near-indispensable tracks that you might like in your collection. I may just check out Rhino’s double CD release, Sons of Mercury. and see what that label managed to do with a more comprehensive sample of this band’s body of work.

    Queensryche......Operation Mindcrime

The best concept album since The Wall. I cannot find one song on this entire CD that I do not like. Not very many CD's in my collection can say that. A well written record with hard riffs, great vocals, and an ingenious story line. Should be in the collection of any metal/hard rock fan. More than likely it probably is. One of the top albums to come out of the 80's. 10 out of 10!!!

    1. I Remember Now
    2. Anarchy-X
    3. Revolution Calling
    4. Operation: Mindcrime

    Tour.

I had the QMS debut on 8 track. We played the crap out of that one. Then some scumbag MFER stole it with about 20 other tapes & my fine underdash 8 track player from my car. Ahh the good old college days. I do have that one on cd, but the sound quality is not that good.

I can't believe the whole week has passed and nobody has covered Queen Latifah or The Quad City DJ's!

I guess the RRRR's will get this board "Rolling" again.
