Questions for you picture takers out there...

I'm hoping some of you photographers on here can answer a few questions for me:) I apologize for the stupid questions in advance:o

1. Why are so many pics I find on the web etc. with big resolutions so much smaller (file size) than a picture I take with my camera with identical size. For example a pic that is 1400x1000 on the web is smaller than a picture I take that is 1400x1000. These are just numbers I threw out, but you get the idea. I'm sure it has something to do with file type, but what is it specifically that makes the difference in size?

2. I'm well aware that my camera is in need of an upgrade. I have a Panasonic Lumix FZ30 which has served my very well over the past few years, but I think it's time for me to step up a little. I'm thinking about a Panasonic Lumix gh1 for the upgrade. Sure, there are better cameras out there for the $, but I figure the transition will be easier for me if I stick to the same brand. I also like the size/features of the gh1. What do you guys think? Am I on the right track, or should I go a different direction completely? All opinions and recommendations are appreciated:)

Sorry for the random questions out of left field here, but I suck at putting my thoughts into complete sentences. Hopefully, you guys will be able to decipher my ramblings, and ask me the right questions so I can make the right decisions:D Thanks for the input!

JPEG is essentially a compression algorithm. You can compress as much or as little as you want, so a large pixel-size JPEG can be large or small, filesize wise. Obviously you lose a lot of information the more you compress the files.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

as far as the learning curve ..if you dont know yet what setting for the pic your taking then staying with the same brand wont help. if i was to offer my advice on photography for the ease of use/cost/takes Great pictures thing it would be the canon eos digital rebel. it comes in a package with 2 lenses and case strap the whole nine for about 1k. there are 5 pages on a 3inch lcd screen of very simple and self explanitory optons and settings. very user friendly and even if you dont kow what setting you want it will tell you haha. just my HO good luck.
