Bad Plate Amp

Got a Micro Pro 1000 with a bad plate amp. Blows the fuse immediately when powered on.
To investigate I unscrewed the plate flipped it over and looked for abnormalities. Didn't really see anything amiss (no burned components on the boards). Went and found a replacement fuse, inserted it and powered the unit up with the plate turned around to visually inspect the power up. Got sparks shooting out of a pair of small pancake style capacitors on the main power and amplification board. No easy fix.
Gave Polk CS a call and they were willing to do an exchange on the plate amp but it was very pricey. So that is out of the question.
The big question is now, where to send the existing board and have it repaired versus an expensive exchange? Any suggestions?
