It's real easy to get to, though. I'd say just meet me at my place and follow me, but i'm going to be getting there at about 12:30 instead of noon. Gotta drop the girlfriend off at work.

If you want to caravan anyways, shoot me a PM, i'll see it in the morning.

Had a great time, even with the smallish group, and i think we generated a pretty large amount of gear to check out even with there only being 4 of us.

Yeah FYI, to those of you who think the woofer breaks up at high volumes on the 15s . . . chances are its your amp being crushed, not the woofers reaching their output limits. The Lsi15s rocked the house hardcore!

What were you running with them? Over all did you like them?

They were John's LSi15s, we ran them on his monster Sunfire, and various tubed preamps and tubed cdps.

I don't think any of us were REAL happy with how they sounded being fed vinyl though. It just sounded strange for some reason.

Oh.. and John was ballsy enough to turn his volume ALL THE WAY up on them, so they were receiving what was it again John? 1200+watts between the two of them? :p

As for overall, (and this is personal opinion, of course) yes, i liked them. But i wouldn't buy them. I thought they sounded good, and were good at what they were meant to do, but they just aren't what my ears are looking for. I think we all had likes and dislikes about all the speakers that we ran throughout the day, which were:

    LSi15s
    Klipsch Forte IIs (i think?)
    Modded Monitor 5jrs
    Paradigm Esprit V.3s

    My quick thoughts:

LSi15s: Very laid back and smooth, authorative bass, great midrange. But i wasn't really fan of the midbass "hump" i was hearing, and the highs actually seemed a little harsh to me under high volumes, but of course, so many other things contribute to that, so it's likely not just the speakers. These sounded to me closer to what i personally would like in an HT setting, and John actually uses them as his REARS in his HT. :p

Klipsch: The midrange and bass on these were damn near perfect. I would have liked a little lower extension, but it is what it is. Even being fed solid state power, they were still surprisingly warm, and voices were hair-raising. Highs could get harsh, though. It was weird, one minute they sounded great, warm, and smooth, but jack the volume up ONE more notch, and all of a sudden they were trying to invade your ears.

5JRs: I really hate to say it, but meh. They sounded good at low volumes, but once we even attempted to fill the room with them, they actually sounded brighter and harsher than the Klipsch, even with the horns. It was strange. I'm going to blame placement on a lot of it, but it was still strange to me. Of course, i have a love/hate relationship with the Monitor series.

Paradigms: I'll admit that they're a real strange speaker. We first hooked them up in front of the Klipschs because we were too lazy to move them. They sounded HORRENDOUS. Ports were chuffing like crazy, bass sounded poppy and flat, it was just ugly. Everyone was all for packing them back up (i cried :p) but i pointed out that the placement sucked. We moved them to about a foot off the wall, and toed in slightly. It was like a new speaker. I think everyone agreed that they were the sleeper of the pairs, but i'd rather everyone else give their thoughts on them, since i AM biased, since they're mine, and i live with them on a daily basis.

Yeah, we did have them being driven by $7k worth of gear, but i am being 110% honest when i say that they perform just as well with my setup. They didn't need the insane power available to them from the Sunfire. ;)

    Thanks for your thoughts.

At a moderate volume , I really liked what I heard of the klipsch on the tube amp.

Sounds like it was a bit of a tall order for the 5jrs. Sl2000?

Yeah, i believe they were SL2000s, just had the crossovers redone if i remember right. And yes, i throughly agree that they were simply outclassed. :)

And yes, i imagine that the Klipsch would have been a different beast on that integrated he had, and they even still sounded GREAT on the sand amp, but it became apparent at high volumes that they just really needed all the tubes they could get. That said, the point where they started to get harsh is a bit beyond what i usually listen to my music at. ;) I think the temptation to try to match the LSi15's volume on every pair of speaker may have been a little too great.

Is it just me or there's something more to get from this? First, I can't imagine getting the volume ALL THE WAY UP with that amount of power and not blow something. Can't defy Physics. EVERY amp will clip at some point. Then everything seemed to sound harsh at higher volumes, even the 15's? Hmmm....

Anyway, great that you guys got together and had some fun.

    Hahah, touche. :)

The LSi15s were the only ones that got the kamikaze treatment, and i don't think the amp was clipping on the Klipsch or the 5jrs. The 5jrs didn't get turned up THAT much at all, and the Klipschs didn't make it to anywhere the near the same volume as the LSis.

There were obviously a lot of other factors to take into consideration, different sources, pres, placement, the room, etc etc etc. And the fact that my ears don't really like highs a whole lot in the first place. I'm hoping Nik, Mike, and John will chime in with their thoughts, i don't pretend to speak for all of us. I know they all liked the LSis more than i did i think.

The amp might have been clipping on the LSis, but i'm 100% positive it wasn't on the others. :)

You'll have to join in next time!

    The more the merrier!:)

The LSi's were far and away the power lovers of the group, and had IMHO the best midrange and above performance. The bass at first was rather muddy and boomy. After setting them up so that the woofers faced inboard to each other and toed in properly did they come to life. Yes, we did max the volume out on them more than once for an extended period and they took all they could get without ill effect to amp or speakers. The bass under these conditions was very well controlled and the speakers showed no sign of failure. The amp never clipped, but the lights did dim to the beat of the music.:D

They did become fairly bright at extreme volume, but not what I would call harsh, unless the music was poorly recorded.

I feel the best bottom end through midrange performance fell to the Klipch by a wide margin...

Yeah, probably a case where my ears are just strange, honestly. I don't like bright, and once i hear any sibilance at all, i can't help but fixate on it. I think a lot of it is because i've been trained to hate bright from a performance aspect most of my life. :D

Seriously... i think the only other times i've listened to music that loud (besides concerts) was:

    1) At Nik's again (re-occuring theme i guess) with his 1.2TLs trying to make the XPA-2 cry.

    2) In my car with my old stereo "just to see what she'll do ayup!"
