So, yesterday my wife bought me a new Xbox 360 Elite for my upcoming birthday. She got the console, extra black controller and Madden 10 all for $309. Well she also decided to get me a 512MB memory card as well to transfer my game data. Well, once I retreaved my profile online it seems all my info was already there. Could someone please tell me why I would need a memory card. Is there data on my old hard drive that I need to get off? I don't download movies or music so what other things would I want to get off the old hard drive.

If you downloaded extras from xBox live you would need to do the transfer. For example, I play Forza alot and bought additional cars online. That stuff is stored on the drive. I called xBox support and they are sending me a data cable to transfer my 20GB content to the new Elite drive.

You would need it to tranfer all of your game saves. Anything you bought off of xbox live can just be downloaded again when you log into live. Unless it has changed recently they will not charge you again for downloads you have already done on that xbox live account.

Anything you've downloaded can be re-downloaded on your new system if you go to your download history from the guide. I can look on mine and tell you exactly where to look if you need, but it should be in your Live account info. In moonpie's case, if he's bought custom stuff in Forza 3 (since they offer custom cars and paint jobs from the community), he might not be able to transfer it any other way but the cable (though I think your in-game purchases are keyed to your Live account in Forza 3 anyway).

The transfer cable is the fastest and best way if you have a lot of stuff, but your save games should be easy enough to port over using the MU.

To be honest the only real good use for the memory card is to store your profile if you go to a friends house or to get extra freebies from places like gamestop or walmart which they used to do with certain games. The nice thing is you can transfer your profile and go to a buddies house and play with your account if he doesn't have xbox live gold or if he hasn't bought certain games but just downloaded the demo. In that case when you log into your account it'll let you play the full version on your account only, but once you leave hes stuck with his demo. The bad thing is stuff like videos can't be used on another console, even if you are logged in with your profile, as they register to the console itself. I used to store my gamer profile on a memory card when i had 2 consoles, one at home and one at work. That way i could play online at work and when i got home the gamesave data and achievements would be stored with my profile and the next time i logged in they'd show on my public profile.
