RT800 on local CL...

So I ran across some Polk Rt800's on CL today... after doing a lot of research, I am torn as to whether I want to check them out or not. I could get the pair for about $75.

Only thing wrong is that the felt (on the lower part) has some scratches... not sure exactly how bad yet, I couldn't tell in the photo.

Any input? Are they worth looking into? Worth $75? I know they are older, not "vintage" but probably made in the late 90's so any concern there?

My current fronts are T15 bookshelfs and the center is the CS10. I would replace the T15's with the Rt800's, any matching issues with the CS10?

$75 is a steal if they're in decent shape. :)

That was my thinking, just not sure how back the scratches on the felt are.... do you know if it possible to repair the felt on them?

I'm not having good luck picturing the "felt." Do you mean the grill cloth?

no, the grille covers the top half of the tower... the lower half is wrapped in some type of felt material. The grilles are in great shape and all of the speakers/tweeters are in great shape.

You can not repair the "felt" as far as I know. It's not really felt. It's kind of a strange, spongy-like [black and gray speck] material that is purely cosmetic. These are a real nice set of speakers, especially for $75.00. These were my first set of Polks that kept me happy for quite some time until the upgrade bug hit. They are a well rounded speaker that plays well on a variety of music.

As far as matching timbre? I have no clue.

That's too bad that they can't be repaired.... hopefully the damage isn't too bad.

I went to look at a pair of RT800s on Thursday down south of Denver. The asking price was 75 which I thought was a steal. Upon arrival, they were so **** I wouldn't have taken them for free. Tweeter was pushed in, smoke residue on top, paint splatters, big gouges from the wood... I could throw my monitor 70's off the 3rd story balcony onto the parking lot and they would be in better shape. Good luck, great deal, as long as they aren't in the shape of the ones I just looked at!

    Good luck and happy listening.

You might be able to modify the material with something that is aesthetically pleasing.

That's too bad about the ones you looked at.... I would not be happy! It's nice to hear that there is still some interest in them, just in case I wanted to sell them for some reason.

You can find interest in nearly any pair of tower speakers for under 100 bucks. Except my roommates sonys that is... haha

Heck, I'm interested in acquiring another pair for a second system I'm building for my 7 month old son. As soon as I find a mint or close to mint set? They are his. It will be the start to his becoming an audiophile, following in the footsteps of his dad [me], his Grandfather and his Great Grandfather. I already have him a Carver 4.0t signed by Bob himself to Aiden [my son] along with a pic of his mom, Bob and I as he was signing it.

If I acquire a pair of these, I'll try to get up with Matt one day and have him sign these as well. I'm hookin' my boy UP!

Well, after looking at my living room some more and taking measurements I just don't have the room for towers.... I have to pass on these.

Nope, not the nifty kevlars, they are the standard vinyl outsides with **** drivers and crayons inside the ports.
