I have a 7.1 HT system and I bought good quality 14 guage speaker wire and was considering banana plugs. I just found a good price of 97 cents a pair on fatwallet.com. Do I need seven pairs or do I need 14 pairs? Do they connect to speakers and to AV receiver or just one of them? Thanks,Newbee,Darryl

The number of bananas that you need depend on how you want to set it up. You can have them only at the AVR or at both the AVR and the speakers.

    AVR/speaker only - 7 pairs
Both AVR and Speakers - 14 pairs

I have then on both the speakers and the AVR my self.
    Front - RTiA5's
    Rear - RTiA3's
    Center - CSiA4
    Sub - PSW110

If you're going to do both ends of all connectors you will need seven 4 packs or 14 2 packs. That's if you don't bi wire, of course. And now class, for our next math problem....just kidding. They connect on most new receivers and speakers. Very convenient when you do any disconnecting.

Your question has already been answered however, I really enjoyed my banana plugs from monoprice. About 2 bucks per pair. They fit in great to my yamaha avr and monitor 70's however after buying new cables I moved them into the bedroom on an onkyo with old R50's... not a tight connection at all. They work, but are pretty loose.

Thank you all for your help. I see doing a keyword search that this question has been answered before. Peace, Darryl

I use the locking GLS banana plugs. They work very well and I like the secure connection. I picked up a 10 pack from speakerepair.com a while back for under $20 when they were on sale. The drawback to the locking version is that they stick out a little farther than non-locking versions.

I use 16 banana plugs and they are the monster ones that you screw in. Takes alot of time and these are only for the front speakers mind you, but well worth it. If you need o unhook for any reason, simply pull them out. They all have a secure connection and plug directly into the back of the receiver as well. Good stuff.
