Hi i just acquired a used psw1000 sub woofer and i hooked it up to my onkyo HT-S580 5.1 surround receiver and the sub works great, but when i turn off the receiver the sub woofer starts to hum . When amp is turned on its fine no hum.
There are a few different ways to hook it up it seems maybe i am not hooked up right? Any help would be great thanks.

its hooked into the high level input b, it has high level inputs, high level outputs and rca jacks that's say low level input. the one i am connected is the type where you push the button and insert the wires in. i don't understand why there is a left and right input?

It is set up that way so both the R channel and L channel signals are amplified through the sub. You want to have both channels going into the sub, otherwise you are missing half the bass.

Try flipping the plug around at the AC outlet the other way to see if that affects the hum.

the cord is polarized so you cant flip it around, and the onkyo only has one two wire output for subwoofer like one speaker wire, you understand?

This is what I found for your AVR. I'm guessing that the signal for L & R are combined in the one, but....... What I would suggest is that you contact Polk customer service as well as Onkyo's CS during normal business hours to find out what option is best for your particular application.

Good luck and keep us in the loop, please.

Well then, just get a "Y" adapter. Plug the RCA cable into the subwoofer out on the AVR, place the "y" adapter at the other end of the RCA and install the 2 ends of the "Y" adapter into the sub's R & L line level input.

Check your settings on the Onkyo. The sub has to receive and sense a signal in order to amplify it. If you would like to check first to make sure that the sub is not part of the issue, hook it directly up to the speaker wires. Either channel or both channels will do.

Does it still happen when the sub is set to "auto"? [as opposed to off or on]
