Wanted: speakers that sound as good as 2.3TL's...

Well, OK, *nearly* as good as the 2.3TL would be fine at this point. These days, practically everything seems to be under 12" wide so that's not a hard requirement.

Satellites with a subwoofer probably won't work for me, placement-wise, but maybe there's a small footprint SW to consider.

The room is about 16x30 with 10 foot ceilings. Will eventually be running separate Adcom amp and pre (pilfered from my main system, then upgrade that).


This is to replace my 2nd pair of 2.3TL's which are too large (width especially). The main problem is, I'll still have my original pair of 2.3TL's on my main system, to remind how much of a downgrade this second pair is.

There aren't many audio stores left standing near me, but I've about exhausted them. I've listened to several of the Definitive Tech 7000 series, some Klipsch, some Martin Logans, some Vienna Acoustics, some Polks, and some Focals. The only ones that had an equally satisfying sound to the 2.3TL's were a $3000 pair of Focals and I don't want to spend that much. I'm open to a used pair of anything, as long as they're in excellent condition.

Any suggestions on speakers (make and model) to try to track down, that meet those requiements would be appreciated. Starting to seem like Mission Impossible though.

As good as playing what? Music? Well there is an entire world of speakers out there that sound better then the 2.3TL's. As they where great speakers and actually still are , placement is a huge problem as I see you already are experiencing or wifey is LOL.

Ok so Good sounding speakers , thats an opinion. I would tell you to buy the Mythos 1's if your looking to do music and theater , I'd tell you to look at the Mythos STS but they might be out of your price range but you have to consider they have built in Sub woofers. Look at B&W CM7's these speakers are amazing and for the money I can't see better. They can do both very well. Check out Dynaudio but I'm thinking they are out of your price class 2.
Whats wrong with a Pair of Lsi15's? Stay in the Pok family , get amazing sounding speakers cheap , they perform better then there price and they are skinny. Not Mythos skinny but much more WAF skinny.

Thanks Mantis. Yep, music. 2 channel only. I listened to the DT 7002,4,6 at 2 different stores, and I just didn't like them for music. I wanted to listen to the Mythos STS but no store near me has them on display. Do they sound significantly different than the 7000 series? How about the Mythos ST (various Mythos models pop up on the local CL but they sell fast)?

There was a pair of used Dynaudio Focus 220's near me, well about an hour away, but they sold before I got a chance to hear them ($2100 for the pair). Is that a model you'd recommend if I happen across another pair?

For Polk, the only local place is Frys. I don't recall if they had the LSi15's. I listened to the LSi9's and oddly enough didn't like them, but then again their soundroom sucked and they had them about 20 feet apart and on a shelf about 5 feet off the ground.
I listened to the RTiA 5's and 7's (they had the 9's but they were dead), and I liked the 5's better. I should go back in the middle of the day when they aren't busy, and maybe I can get the salesman to move the LSi9's. I imagine they'd be better on stands though.
