i heard that was a problem with the earliest models but wasn't a very common problem. The newer ones are supposed to not have that as a problem anymore... supposedlyHT basement room:

Yeah it's a common problem with the old 60g. You can send it to sony to get fixed for $150 but you might not get yours back. It's a crap shoot. My 60G has been freezing up the last two days. I really hope it's not going to die on me.
Sad because the 60G is the BEST PS3 ever made.(3) PS3's, Xbox 360, (2) Wii's and Nintendo NES

LOL, while I agree that the 60's were good, the first gen 80's are IMHO, the best one out there. Not much different between the two besides an extra 20GB of space, so I guess they are about the same. As stated above Sony will "fix" the unit, if possible, for about $150-$175, but you probably will not get your unit back. Also, the replacement they send you could potentially be a "downgraded" 60GB model.

Your laser which reads the bluray is probably done if it's not reading them anymore
you can try to pick up one of those Blu-Ray lens cleaning kit (which is a disc) and see if it solves the problem...if not then the laser needs to be replaced/fixed if you want it to read bluray again -

I've seen two school of thoughts.
1. The BR laser is dead.
2. The BR drive mechanism is dead.
I think mine (60gb also) falls within #2. At first, I thought it was some sort of BR recognition problem (reads DVD's fine) but the more I read about the problem it looks like the BR portion isn't spinning up most of the time. If I can get it to spin it'll spin forever but it's a very small chance to get it to start. Mine acts like it needs a good push. -
I was lucky and decided to pick up one of the first gen 80gb ps3s. In fact originally i bought 3 of them, one for myself and 2 for a company in china that needed them. The guy at the register gave me a funny look when i said i wanted 3 of them, lol, it was priceless.

The 60G is the best because it played all PS2 games it had the hadware in it. The 80G only plays around 60 - 80% of games because it uses the emulator software.
Only advantage the 80gig had was the extra 20g but you can update the HD so that was no biggie.
I think the OP is just better buying the new slim. You can fix it yourself frou around $80. Check Youtube and other sites. You can buy the BD drive off Ebay.(3) PS3's, Xbox 360, (2) Wii's and Nintendo NES

I picked a new laser up from here: http://www.gadgetresurrection.com/product.php?productid=16143 a couple of months ago and got my 60 gb PS3 working again. I just googled how to do it and pulled up a video and a couple other websites. It took me 45 minutes to swap the laser out. If you have the cash, I'd try this route.
