For my music class one of the requirements is to go to a concert and write a report about it. My selection is down to these. Help me choose.

John Mayer

Michael Buble

Philadelphia Orchestra

Rascal Flatts

Leann Rimes

Brad Paisley

Or if there is another one you would recommend please suggest it. None of these I have ever seen in concert.

I'd probably go to Rascal Flatts if I had to pick from that group.

A quick ticketmaster search turned up Eric Clapton/Jeff Beck and Muse. Both at the Garden. Either of those is a damn sight better than what you have listed. Unless the Philharmonic is your thing. That would be cool.

Brad Paisley, Rascal Flatts or Leanne Rimes... seriously? ;)

Make you can convince your professor to let you go see Avatar again. You know... just because.
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

Ya know...I cannot seem to verify that Silversun Pickups is indeed the opener. I got that from a friend who's info is often wrong So that is "unconfirmed" info at this time.

First time to see Muse and I quite excited.

Good deal. I would definitely be trying to score tickets to that. Should be amazing.

I hate stupid music assignments like this....it's crap. May I ask what kind of class is it, and at what level?

Being the classical musician, who has performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra four times, I'd definietly say John Mayer.

Just kidding, but you should find something the Orchestra is playing that you like. I wouldn't go listen to some strange 20th century minimalist music, but if you find something that you're already into...

Two things that I'd see in a second - Beethoven's 5th symphony on Tuesday Feb. 2nd at 8pm, and The Firebird by Stravinsky. That's a badass piece of music - Feb 12, 13, 14, 16. In March is Beethoven's Eroica Symphony, April has The Rite of Spring - Stravinsky again, AND Beethoven's 2nd Piano concerto and Petroushka - yet another Stravinsky...Guess it's a big year for him :)

Excellent advise James. Some of that 20th century minimalist music is so boring and sounds like finger nails across a blackboard to me.

Any of the above suggestions would raise goosebumps but "The Firebird" will bring you to tears. It's awesome.

    Hearingimpaired -

I was in a concert of 20th century music commissioned for the New York PHilharmonic in which I sang in a choir for two songs. They were...well...interesting...but there was a minimalist piece. It was like 22 minutes long - it was the longest 22 minutes of my life.

I've studied many of Stravinsky's choral works, and seen his opera, but never studied his orchestral pieces. I love to listen to them. I have a VHS video of Leonard Bernstein preparing Rite of Spring with an orchestra of young musicians, right before it's death, and it is fantastic, wtih a lot of insight.

I'll be the one to go way out in left field and recommend Michael Buble.
My wife and I saw him this fall in Indianapolis, and he kept nearly 7,500 attendees well satisfied with the performance.
Lots of very high end PA gear.
    And his band is wonderful.
They tour so much that everything is very 'tight'. An excellent concert.
Michael Buble has the unique ability to have one believe that he is singing just to them, even though that one person is in an arean with thousands of others.
A very personal experience given by a real entertainer, that is in a prime part of his career.
    Give Buble a try.

Definitely NOT John Mayer or Rascal Flatts

Mayers' version of a Sinatra classic on Chris Botti's concert dvd was insulting.

And Rascal Flatts is country musics answer to N'SYNC. Bleh.
I refuse to argue with idiots, because people can't tell the DIFFERENCE!

+1 My wife and I saw him a couple of years ago and it was great show! One thing you might consider is to go to a show you wouldn't normally attend. When I took MA in college that's the advice we were given and it helped open my eyes to all kinds of music that I would have otherwise not given a chance.
