It seems my ps3 has stopped reading blue ray disc. Reads dvd and games just fine. I have the 80gb model and it seems this is a common problem. Just wondering has anyone replaced the drive, do I need to replace the whole drive or just the part that reads blue ray. I repair laptops for a living so I have no problem taking it apart. thanks for any help. Kinda sucks because that was the main reason I chose it over the 360. Could be worse I could have got a 360 and got the RROD.

Just curious...how old is your model? I think we should start collecting some info on failures...because some of us have never had one and, recently, an entire crop of PS3 failures are surfacing! Would be interesting to see if we're doing anything different from each other?

my 40GB stopped reading discs entirely the other day. Bought a new laser lens off ebay and took it apart for the first time and it works fine again now. You do not need to replace the whole drive. I'm suspecting that your laser module is burned. You can try taking it apart and clean the lens and see if it'll work before spending $50 on a new laser head. There are a couple different models of laser head (depending on the production date and PS3 model), so it's best to take it apart, and find out the laser module model number before buying.

Some sources on the Internet suggest reformatting the entire PS3 but I think what it does is only reformatting the hard drive, doesn't make sense that it'll fix the non-read Bluray drive issue.

You will need a Torx T-10 security screwdriver to remove the first screw. I enjoyed seeing what was inside the PS3.

I also have one of the 80g ps3's, and there is something you need to be aware of before you attempt to just swap parts.

An electrician friend and I have been attempting to repair several broken PS3's that we bought for 50$ each. We just assumed that we could mix and match parts and make 2 out of 3 broken ones.

The problem we encountered is that the seperate components are "keyed" to the individual PS3. You can't just take a blu ray player out of one and stick into another...it won't run. It is "keyed" so that it is not recognized.

We are attempting to find a way to re-key components, but so far, it has been hard to pry secrets out of those that know.

i don't know for sure but I really really doubt that is the case here.

    1. The problem he's experiencing has been fixed by many people, including myself and as long as he buys the correct laser module, this problem will be fixed easily.

    2. I don't think Sony would spend that much effort and money on what I consider a frivolous attempt to prevent people from fixing their own PS3. This could possibly stem from the fear of system being hacked but it still sounds pretty ridiculous to me. Sony did use different components during different production periods, but each machine is "key-ed" differently? Of course I could be wrong but I highly doubt that.
