QOTD: Are there too many audio companies or not enough?

Granted, some companies have failed and closed up shop due to a souring economy and the strength of the dollar going south. However, there are still quite a few left. Some vast and far reaching like Kenwood, Pioneer, Sony, Panasonic, Onkyo, Yamaha and even our beloved Polk Audio. Others not so vast and far reaching but still a formidable presence like NAD, Adcom or Rotel. there are esoteric brands that have a unique product and fairly well mass produced like ASL, Jolida, Outlaw or AV123. Then there are the esoteric brands that are not very mass produced at all...hell, there's so many of them I'm not even going to try to name them. Then you have kings of the heap. Krell, Sonus Faber, Linn, JM Labs and a whole bunch of other names you've probably never heard of.
Needless to say, the field is heavily covered. I'm all for variety but, is there a certain point where the variety is too much and the level of choices is over whelming? Obviously the market supports the level of saturation currently but is it going anywhere? Is it dropping? What do you think? Are there too many audio companies or not enough?
Me, personally, I wonder how the market supports all of this. It's easy to see how, loonies like you guys here who change gear more often than you change underwear, that's how. So I think the market is actually skewed because of that. But it is what it is and while my head spins at the number of choices, I don't think there are too many. I don't think we need anymore but then again, we'll see new ones when we see someone come up with what they think is the next best thing. At times I wonder though, what's the next best thing going to be? I mean when we have things like magic pebbles and magic volume knobs and magic sticky stuff and so on and so forth, are we stretching for the next best thing? Or are we so hungry for the next best thing that we are looking for anything and latching on to it? Maybe that's a question for another day?

Competition is good for the consumer;)Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
